5 Reasons Why You Need to Build Your List : CB Virtual Services

Internet marketing on a successful level includes list building when it comes to your site visitors and customers. Putting this contact list together is important for several reasons.

The first and most obvious reason is to stay in touch with your clients. Follow-up is the biggest component of future sales and it lets you customize your products and services more effectively.

Secondly, it lets you send them future offers that were not offered to them during the original sale. These could be accessory products to their original purchase, or a service that fits the same category. If you work as an affiliate marketer as well, this is a built-in audience for those offers.

Third, it gives you more opportunity in terms of partnering with other internet marketers. Sharing the power of your list with someone else is a service you can get paid for. Certain companies will pay for the right to have their information emailed to your list in order to increase site traffic and purchases.

The fourth consideration for list building is to reward clients and customers during sharing contests. They can each have a referral number, based on name or customer ID, and can be tracked in your records. By using a list like this, it gives you a way to track who is most effective during social campaigns and who sends traffic more often.

Finally, if you don?t build a list, you are throwing money and time away. Internet marketing is about creating an online presence that lasts. Without a list, you may make contact with several thousand people but have no way to reach them again. Depending on their memory to come back and see you is ineffective. Instead, use technology to build a contact list that creates future profits in several forms.Email Marketing

A Life Not Wasted: Adoniram Judson | the Cripplegate

Adoniram_JudsonI have been profoundly impressed with the sacrifices made by Christian men and women throughout the centuries of church history. From martyrs to missionaries, these individuals have served their King with greatest intensity and courage, valiantly standing as examples for those who come behind them. They are individuals of whom ?this world was not worthy? (Hebrews 11:38) because their eyes were not set on the worth of this world, but rather on the values of heaven.

One of those individuals is Adoniram Judson.

Though he grew up in a pastor?s home, Judson walked away from the truth as a young man, only to be recovered in a dramatic fashion. John Piper details this part of Judson?s life in his book Don?t Waste Your Life:

What his godly parents did not know was that Adoniram was being lured away from the faith by a fellow student named Jacob Eames who was a Deist. By the time Judson?s college career was finished, he had no Christian faith. He kept this concealed from his parents until his twentieth birthday, August 9, 1808, when he broke their hearts with his announcement that he had no faith and that he wanted to write for the theater and intended to go to New York, which he did six days later on a horse his father gave him as part of his inheritance.? . . .

[Some time later, Judson] stayed in a small village inn where he had never been before. The innkeeper apologized that his sleep might be interrupted because there was a man critically ill in the next room. Through the night Judson heard comings and goings and low voices and groans and gasps. It bothered him to think that the man next to him may not be prepared to die. He wondered about himself and had terrible thoughts of his own dying. He felt foolish because good Deists weren?t supposed to have these struggles.

When he was leaving in the morning he asked if the man next door was better. ?He is dead,? said the innkeeper. Judson was struck with the finality of it all. On his way out he asked, ?Do you know who he was?? ?Oh yes. Young man from the college in Providence. Name was Eames, Jacob Eames.?

Judson was stunned. Though he had tried to run away, it was obvious that God was pursuing him.?The Lord providentially used the death of the antagonistic Jacob Eames to bring Adoniram Judson back to Himself.

In 1808, Judson entered Andover Seminary and dedicated himself to full-time missionary service. Four years later, in 1812,?he would?become one of the first foreign missionaries to set out from North America. Significantly, he married his wife Ann on February 5, 1812. Just two weeks later,?the newlyweds set sail for India.

In a moving letter to his future father-in-law, Adoniram Judson spelled out the sacrifice he was asking his future bride to make. Here is part of that letter:

I have now to ask whether you can consent to part with your daughter early next spring, to see her no more in this world; whether you can consent to her departure for a heathen land, and her subjection to the hardships and sufferings of a missionary life; whether you can consent to her exposure to the dangers of the ocean; to the fatal influence of the southern climate of India; to every kind of want and distress; to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death?

Can you consent to all this for the sake of Him who left his heavenly home, and died for her and for you; for the sake of perishing immortal souls; for the sake of Zion and the glory of God? Can you consent to all this in hope of soon meeting your daughter in the world of glory, with a crown of righteousness brightened by the acclamations of praise which shall redound to her Savior from heathens saved, through her means, from eternal woe and despair??

That letter would prove to be?prophetic. The couple?s missionary endeavors, taking them first to India and later to Burma (present-day Myanmar), were fraught?with suffering and tragedy. They underwent economic challenges, losing the financial backing of their supporters only a few months after leaving the United States. Their plans unexpectedly changed when problems with their visas in India forced them to?settle in Burma.

Once there, they faced a severe language barrier ? studying the language for 12 hours a day for over three years in order to learn it. When they finally could communicate, their message met with relative indifference from the Burmese citizens ? due in part to the prevelant Bhuddism and also to the imperial death-sentence that awaited anyone convicted of changing religion.?After 12 years of work, Judson and his fellow missionaries?saw only 18 conversions.

Beyond the constant threat of sickness and disease, Judson also faced serious dangers from the government. Suspected of being a spy during Burma?s civil war, he was sent to a death prison where he was tortured, and forced on a death march that nearly killed him. In all, he spent 17 months behind bars while his wife Ann did everything she could to secure his release.

More painful than that, Judson endured the pain of loss some two dozen times. His wife Ann died just a few months after he was released from prison.?She would not be the only family member who died during his tenure.?From 1812 to 1850, twenty-four of Judson?s relatives or close associates went home to heaven, including several of his children.

As a husband, father, missionary, and friend, Judson truly knew what it was to sacrifice and suffer. Nevertheless, enduring all of this, he steadfastly pursued his goal of evangelizing the Burmese people and translating the Bible into their language. When he died, the translation work had been completed, 100 churches had been planted, and?8,000 Burmese professed faith in Jesus Christ.

Adoniram Judson and his family made enormous sacrifices for the sake of the gospel. From a worldly perspective, some might argue that they wasted their lives. They moved far away from the comforts of?their North American roots; endured the pain of rejection, hunger, torture, and loss; and did all of this to bring good news to a largely antagonistic?and indifferent?audience.

Looking back, of course, we see that Judson?s efforts were not in vain. His translation of the Bible is still used in Myanmar today, and his spiritual legacy continues to bear fruit. In 1993, the head of the Myanmar Evangelical Fellowship stated, ?Today, there are 6 million Christians in Myanmar, and every one of us trace our spiritual heritage to one man?the Reverend Adoniram Judson.?

AP Interview: Ahmadinejad pushes new world order

(AP) ? After an hour of fielding questions about Syria, sanctions and nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had enough. Now, he said, it was his turn to choose the topic ? his "new order" which will inevitably replace the current era of what he called U.S. bullying.

Continuing his hectic pace of media appearances and diplomatic meetings, Ahmadinejad presented an air of boredom when it came to the hot topic on everyone's mind ? Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of impending war. Whether it was feigned or sincere, he said he would much rather be talking about his vision of what the next world order might be.

Conveniently, it would be an order in which the U.S. and the traditional powers play a smaller role and every country has equal standing (though the state of Israel, he often predicts, will soon become a historical footnote).

"God willing, a new order will come and will do away with ... everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday, speaking through a translator. "All of the animosity, all of the lack of sincerity will come to an end. It will institute fairness and justice."

He said the world was losing patience with the current state of affairs.

"Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying," he said. "I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

The interview was held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly ? Ahmadinejad's last as president of Iran. He was to address the assembly Wednesday morning.

He also discussed solutions for the Syrian civil war, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama warned Iran that time is running out to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. In a speech to the General Assembly, Obama said the United States could not tolerate an Iran with atomic weapons.

Ahmadinejad would not respond directly to the president's remarks, saying he did not want to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

But he argued that the international outcry over Iran's nuclear enrichment program was just an excuse by the West to dominate his country. He claimed that the United States has never accepted Iran's choice of government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"Everyone is aware the nuclear issue is the imposition of the will of the United States," he said. "I see the nuclear issue as a non-issue. It has become a form of one-upmanship."

Ahmadinejad said he favored more dialogue, even though negotiations with world powers remain stalled after three rounds of high-level meetings since April.

He said some world leaders have suggested to him that Iran would be better off holding nuclear talks only with the United States.

"Of course I am not dismissing such talks," he said, asked if he were open to discussions with the winner of the American presidential election.

Israeli leaders, however, are still openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing diplomacy as a dead end. Israel and many in the West suspect that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and cite its failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Ahmadinejad also proposed forming a new group of 10 or 11 countries to work to end the 18-month Syrian civil war. Representatives of nations in the Middle East and elsewhere would meet in New York "very soon," he said.

Critics have accused Tehran of giving support to Syrian President Bashar Assad in carrying out massacres and other human rights violations in an attempt to crush the uprising against his rule. Activists say nearly 30,000 people have died.

Ahmadinejad said the so-called contact group hopes to get the Syrian government and opposition to sit across from each other.

"I will do everything in my power to create stability, peace and understanding in Syria," Ahmadinejad said, adding that he last spoke with Assad one year ago over the telephone.

Earlier this month, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced the formation of a four-member contact group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia so far has not participated.

Ahmadinejad denied Iranian involvement in plotting attacks on Israelis abroad, despite arrests and accusations by police in various countries. He also vehemently disputed the U.S. claim that Iranian agents played a role in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States last year.

Ahmadinejad will leave office next June after serving two four-year terms. He threw out numbers and statistics during the interview to show that Iran's economy and the lives of average Iranians have improved under his watch. Since his 2005 election, he claimed, Iran went from being the world's 22nd-largest economy to the 17th-largest; non-petroleum related exports increased sevenfold; and the basic production of goods has doubled. Median income increased by $4,000, he said.

"Today's conditions in Iran are completely different to where they were seven years ago in the economy, in technical achievement, in scientific know-how," Ahmadinejad said. "All of these achievements, though, have been reached under conditions in which we were brought under heavy sanctions."

Iran has called for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit its critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks.

It was not possible to immediately verify most of Ahmadinejad's figures and claims. The CIA's World Factbook says Iran was the world's 18th largest economy last year, as measured by its gross domestic product. It said Iran's "GDP growth remains stagnant" and that the country "continues to suffer from double-digit unemployment and underemployment."

But the Factbook credited Ahmadinejad with spearheading a law to reduce state subsidies that drained the budget and mostly benefited Iran's upper and middle classes.

On other matters, Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago. He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran. Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmothers in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

In spite of Ahmadinejad's assertions on the importance of dialogue and respect for others, he has presented a hard line in many areas in this week's media appearances.

He refuses to speak of the state of Israel by name and instead refers only to the "Zionists." And when asked on Monday about author Salman Rushdie, he made no attempt to distance himself from recent renewed threats on the author's life emanating from an Iranian semi-official religious foundation.

"If he is in the U.S.," said the president of Iran, "you should not broadcast it for his own safety."

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says the nation's debt could grow to almost $20 trillion if the country re-elects President Barack Obama.

Romney also says his policies would do more to help middle-class families than the president's.

Campaigning in Ohio, where polls give the advantage to Obama, the Republican presidential nominee combined a sharper focus on the mounting debt with an insistence that middle-class families are struggling.

Said Romney: "I want to help them."

The national debt is $16 trillion and growing. Romney says the interest payments alone cost more than what the U.S. spends on several government departments combined.

Romney planned two additional stops Wednesday in Ohio.

Redbox Instant targets launch by yearend, blends subscription streaming and DVD rentals with VOD

The last concrete details we'd heard about Redbox Instant was that it was entering internal alpha testing, but now Verizon exec Eric Bruno has revealed more background information. Previous info indicated the service would focus more heavily on movies than the back catalog of TV shows that is a part of Netflix Watch Instantly and Amazon Prime Instant Video, and Bloomberg reports Redbox will break with their models by paying its content providers per subscriber cable TV-style, instead of a flat rate decided up front. What customers will get is a monthly subscription and allotment of disc rentals from Redbox's kiosks, as well as access to VOD movie rentals and downloadable purchases through the service. The alpha test is currently in the hands of about 500 Verizon employees, with plans for a short public test before launching in a late November / mid-December time frame. The main unanswered question however is how much it will all cost, but knowing what we do now -- how much are you willing to pay?

Man's failing heart heals itself on day of emergency transplant

A miraculous thing happened the day Michael Crowe was set to receive a potentially life-saving heart transplant. Doctors had determined the surgery would be ineffective - but his heart suddenly started beating again.

Crowe, a 23-year-old pharmacy student from Omaha, had been diagnosed with acute myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, likely caused by a viral infection. When his mother brought him to the emergency room at his local hospital on Aug. 14, doctors found his heart was only functioning at about 25 percent efficiency. The hospital referred him to the Nebraska Medical Center, and by the time he was admitted to the intensive care unit there, his heart's efficiency had dropped below 10 percent.

"If he had come to us any later, his heart would have just stopped," Dr. John Um, Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation at Nebraska Medical Center told ABC News.

Doctors hooked Crowe up to a heart-lung machine that would essentially act as his heart for him, pumping blood throughout his body.

"When the heart stops, that's defined as clinical death," Dr. Um said. "In this case, his body only stayed alive because the machine was pumping his blood for him."

Crowe was immediately placed on a list for an emergency heart transplant, and remained on the heart-lung machine in a medically induced coma until an appropriate donor heart became available.

After nearly three weeks, a heart was found. The good news was followed by bad, though: tests revealed he had contracted a blood infection. Doctors said he probably would not survive the transplant surgery.

About an hour later, one of his doctors noticed something strange - his blood pressure was going up, something that would be impossible if his body was only receiving blood through the machine.

"His heart started working again on its own," Dr. Um told ABC. "The left side of his heart was pumping blood again. The right side was still weak, so we slowly eased him off the machine. At this point, he was in pretty good shape."

Dr. Um said this was the first time one of his patients has been on an external heart-lung machine for this long before his heart started beating again.

"He's home now, doing great," Dr. Um said. "He's really, really lucky."

Um said doctors seem to be seeing more cases similar to this, in which a failing heart heals itself.

"The interesting thing is that if he had gotten a transplant right away, we would have never known if he could have recovered on his own," Um said. "Now that we have technology that allows people to remain on external heart machines longer, we could see this more."

In the simplest terms, Dr. Um explained, the heart got sick, triggering an immune response that shut the heart down to fight the infection, and eventually healed itself. Technology kept Crowe's body alive while his heart healed.

Although there could be effects on his heart in the future, Dr. Um said young people who suffer from acute heart problems like Crowe's tend to make a full recovery, healing fully.

Luke Donald: a 'hometown' star on the other team

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Ryder Cup comes to Chicago for the first time, and it's only fitting that the Windy City can claim one of the players as its own.

Luke Donald spent four years at Northwestern, winning an NCAA title and graduating with a degree in art. He married a local girl and never found reason to settle anywhere else. He lives on the North Side and suffers annually with Cubs fans. After the Ryder Cup, he and his wife will pick apples in the country for her birthday.

There's only one catch ? Donald is English.

The only "hometown" player in this Ryder Cup will be playing for the visiting team.

"Unique, isn't it?" Donald said.

This is not the first time for a Ryder Cup held in the United States to include European players who make their primary home in America ? Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose (Orlando, Fla.), Paul Casey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Jesper Parnevik (Jupiter, Fla.) to name a few. But those are seen as golf communities. Chicago is among the world's great sports cities, and it's one of the best golf markets in America.

It is expected to be loud at Medinah when the matches begin Friday, and there is little doubt that will give the Americans a big edge in crowd support.

So where does that leave Donald?

"The way I look at it is the home team has the biggest advantage," he said. "Just taking away 1 percent of the crowd support, that's a help to our team. And that's the way I'm looking at it. But, yeah, it's kind of odd. I don't play Medinah that much. I've played it twice in the last five weeks or something like that. I don't really go there that much. Staying in a hotel 20 miles away from where you live is kind of strange, but that's the way it goes."

Donald will have support from more than just a few friends and family members. Europeans are coming across for the Ryder Cup, too, and you'll be able to hear them singing around the first tee and belting out that "Ole, ole, ole ole" across the tree-lined course.

But it won't quite be the same as what Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes heard at Valhalla in their native Kentucky, the reception Padraig Harrington and the Irish boys received at The K Club, Jose Maria Olazabal at Valderrama or Lee Westwood at The Belfry.

Donald is very much English. He just happens to love Chicago, which is why he never left.

He first saw the city during a brief recruiting trip in April. Donald got off the plane and saw snow covering the ground.

"I was wondering how I was going to play golf in college when it was still a little chilly out," he said. "That was my first impression. And then my coach took me around to all the courses, just amazing golf courses. I had never seen anything like that coming from England. Also just amazed at college sports in general, just how big everything was. Our stadium was 55,000, and that was considered small in college sports. That's a big Premier League football stadium in England."

It was at Northwestern that he met his wife, Diane. They started getting serious right before he turned pro, while she was still a sophomore at Northwestern. That was enough reason to stay, though not the only reason. Donald remains with Pat Goss, his coach at Northwestern. His friends outside golf are in Chicago.

Most players turn pro and move to Florida, Texas or Arizona.

Donald used to stay with friends when he went to Florida in the winter to keep his golf game sharp. Now he has a house in Jupiter and plays out of The Bear's Club when it turns cold up north. But his main home is Chicago. It's been that way for years, and probably will be for some time.

"I think you become familiar with a place," Donald said. "I had a lot of friends. My coach, Pat, was probably a big reason, too. I started dating Diane a couple months before I got my tour card, but we met when I was in college. I didn't really have any reason to go anywhere else, other than the weather. But you always stay where you feel comfortable. And I felt very comfortable in Chicago."

This isn't the first time Donald is playing a Ryder Cup on American soil. He made his debut at Oakland Hills outside Detroit in 2004 as a captain's pick, though not many paid attention. He had only one PGA Tour win at the time ? the Southern Farm Bureau Classic ? and three wins worldwide.

Donald only recently relinquished the No. 1 ranking to Rory McIlroy. Until then, he had been at No. 1 for a total of 56 weeks. Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros are the only other players who had been No. 1 longer since the ranking began in 1986.

Even now, Donald has an unassuming manner that doesn't draw much attention. Heads don't turn when he walks into a restaurant or shows up at an event.

Donald remains active with Northwestern, particularly the golf team. He is involved with The First Tee in Chicago, along with the Ronald McDonald house. They have two young daughters, but still take time to go to restaurants, sports events, along with arts shows and museums.

"We like blending in," Diane Donald said. "Everything is so easy to get to in Chicago, and it has everything. It's kind of funny because I felt like I waited my entire life to leave Chicago, and now we have a home in Florida that's empty half the year. Luke loves being here."

Only at Medinah, he won't feel entirely at home.

Expecting the Unexpected on Your Wedding Day | Quality Life ...

Weddings can bring out the best and worst in everyone and definitely the crazy in a few. Whether it?s your overbearing mother-in-law, or the best man having a few too many before the ceremony, plenty of unexpected things can occur on your wedding day. One thing you can expect is that something will go wrong?be it the DJ shows up late, the cake melts in the summer heat, or your wedding dress fits a bit too snug. Keep an open mind and realize that this is your wedding day?good or bad?it?s the best day of your life. Pay attention to what is important and don?t listen to your crazy bridesmaids when they dish out complaints about their dresses resembling 1970?s glamour shots. It will all be fine in the end, but if it doesn?t work out and you have a true disaster on your hands, think of the positive in that you will have a great story to retell for the rest of your life.

Family Arguments

It wouldn?t be a wedding unless there was a family argument. Family arguments usually occur early on in the wedding planning process, but just because you think the issues are resolved, doesn?t mean your family always agrees. Often times, family arguments carry over to the actual wedding day. Pick a close friend to keep your crazy family members at bay, so that you can enjoy your day in peace.

Bad Guests

A bad guest can come in many forms. It could be the overly drunk guest, the downright rude one, or the groomsman who hits on everyone?even your married Aunt Bertha. Many guests like to make the day about them instead of realizing the day is all about the bride and groom. Don?t feed into this type of guest?s antics and focus on you and your beloved.

Photographers from Hell

A common complaint from brides is that their photographers didn?t pay attention to their wants and needs. Voice your complaints early on so that you get the pictures you want and not just the glamour shots the photographers wants for their website. It?s your wedding, so you should have a clear game plan of who you want in your pictures and where you want them taken.

Forgetting the Rings

As you focus on the bigger picture items, don?t forget about the smaller things like the wedding rings. Forgetting the ring at home or back at the hotel is one of the most common wedding mishaps. If this happens to you, don?t fret, borrow a ring from a relative or a member of the wedding party.

What unexpected event are you expecting on your wedding day?

Last Saturday, I was taking a nap after lunch. Suddenly a touch of sweet, aromatic and delicious smell awakened me.? I instantly felt hungry! I rushed downstairs to find out that my daughter made a delicious cake to surprise me as that day was my birthday. She made the cake without taking anybody?s help. It turned out so soft and moist and of course delicious. She even took snaps for my blog. Isn?t she cute?

Here is the recipe:

Original recipe makes 12 cupcakes or 1- 9x9 inch pan but my daughter took a small heart shaped pan that didn?t hold all the batter. So she poured the remaining batter into a cupcake pan that gave her 16 small cupcakes. (See the picture above)

Ingredients:

  • 1 ? cups All Purpose Flour
  • ? cup Milk
  • 1 ? tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 cup White Sugar
  • ? cup Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • A handful of Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips (My daughter added these as her own special touch)

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Meanwhile, grease a 9x9 inch pan or line a muffin pan with paper liners.
  3. In a bowl, cream the sugar and butter together.
  4. Then crack the eggs, add them to the bowl, beat well and stir in the vanilla.
  5. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the above mixture and mix well.
  6. Finally stir in the milk and chocolate chips and mix well.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. If using muffin pan spoon in the batter.
  8. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven. ?For cupcakes, bake 20 to 25 minutes.
  9. The cake is done when a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the cake and the cake springs back when touched.
  10. Remove the cake from the oven and leave aside until it becomes completely cold.
  11. Then cut into pieces and enjoy.
  12. Yummy!

Twitter CEO reveals plans for interactive tweets, content curation, reinforces belief in syndication

Twitter CEO reveals plans for interactive tweets, content curation, reinforces belief in syndication

Twitter has ruffled a few feathers recently, so when CEO Dick Costolo took the stage at the Online News Association conference in San Francisco, he took the opportunity to put some minds at rest. First he dismissed the idea that the service would become a media company by forcing users to the site or official app for content, before reasserting his belief in syndication. Costolo then went on to imply that the reason behind the tighter (and unpopular) API controls was ensuring quality -- stating that Twitter would reach its full potential now there's more control over how tweets are delivered. With boots strapped, we can look forward to some new features, such as the option to curate messages that are published (such as during live events) plus tweets with interactive features like polls during live sports games. The famous 140 character limit is to remain, but will also serve as a "caption for additional functionality." Perhaps of most interest to disenfranchised developers, however, was the mention of application functionality in tweets, where short messages could contain small interactive apps. Something for devs to get potentially get back on board with? We hope so. But until further details unfold, we're still left considering our options.

When the Hiring Boss Is an Algorithm

I can't claim to be an industrial psychologist, but I have worked with them and written much of the software that does some of the predictive analysis that was mentioned. I can claim to have a lot of experience with how these tests work.

I have to disagree with you right off the bat here: Employment screening tests are not a sham, and there are many good things about them.

- Has value, but primarily to the employer

Some of the predictive factors that show immediate value are used to best utilize an employee: whether they prefer working solo or in a group, whether money or recognition motivates them, if they are highly detail oriented, or whether or not they'll rock the boat (which could be a good thing! - like suggesting a more efficient process to replace an old, tried, and true one). This helps a manager provide a working environment that best allows an individual to excel, or to position people in groups so any perceived faults are covered with an overlap.

What also ends up being really important in these tests - to employers at least - is whether or not these people tend to lie, steal, or cheat, to abuse drugs or alchol, or may simply be reliable or not. Yes, if you crunch the numbers, you can take a good guess and produce a weighted prediction about this just from a personality profile.

When you're hiring for Walmart or Home Depot or some other vast chain with a large population of unskilled workers, weeding out the likely-to-be-bad ones shows a real financial impact, tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, statistically proven. Though the damages may not reach into the millions, smaller business owners are even more impacted by this.

- Must be applied properly

Some businesses, like Keller Williams Reality, do not apply their personality profiling properly. They use a Jungian based personality matrix - simplified slightly - to pigeonhole an applicant. If you do not fit the hole specified for the job, you don't get the job. They even make a big deal about how everyone applying for every position is required to do this, even if it's the next CEO (which was probably a lie, but c'mon, these folks are salepeople at heart). However, they decide in advance which single personality a given job requires, and if you don't match it exactly, you're out. So if you apply for a programmer position, and you're an extrovert, you won't get the job. If you're creative - you don't get the job. You have to correspond to THEIR sterotype.

Obviously this is wrong.

As the parent poster can probably tell you, the proper way to do it is to have your current employees take a test, sort by role, and attempt to find people who are close to the personality traits that your star individuals have in common. You'll also have to update this over time as market or work environments change.

This works because we're producing sample data, isolating trends, and using it to predict success based on commonalities. It's simple statistics. This is how we can 'catch' drug abusers and thieves before the fact: using the personality profiling tests data from criminals, we can find people who match their common traits. It may sound harsh, but the false positive outliers are exactly that - outliers. The vast majority is predictable to a reasonable degree.

Application of this information is a standard practice in risk analysis. If you're hiring for a casino dealer, and your applicant shows up as being 80-90 out of 100 match with career criminals, maybe consider a bit more carefully or do a full background check, or maybe just don't hire them - find a less risky applicant.

- Can be gamed

Most of these tests are straightforward. There's rarely any tricks or clever 'gotchas'. This isn't like a police interrogation where they're trying to trap you. They're personality profiles, and they don't have 'correct answers'.

However, if you can successfully role take, you can determine the outcome without much guile. This is hard for many people to do, granted, which is why we're not all professional actors, but it is possible. Just don't be shallow about it. Don't think "The perfect casino dealer would never even steal a paperclip - that's what they want!"... no, a real casino dealer will occasionally abscond with an office pen or pack of sticky notes, and feel jealous when someone wins half their yearly salary in a single hand. Roleplay a real person, and you should be fine. Roleplay a caricature, and you'll be found out easily.

(hint: never, EVER, say that you _NEVER_ lie, or _NEVER_ steal. Everyone does, a little, and that's a hint that you're attempting to deceive, which is always a bad thing).

- My own personal opinion based on 8+ years of experience with these systems

is that this is primarily valuable for filtering the unsuitable candidates for unskilled blue collar or entry-level white collar jobs. As per the article, the biggest value they see is recouping their 5,000$ training fee. In many places, it's simply to find someone who won't run off with the register contents, or won't show up high - or not at all.

On the employer's side, managers are simply not equipped with the training, or more often, the responsibility and power together, to ensure that the positive aspects that can be derived can be put to use. They don't often have the latitude to randomly swap group members or provide quiet work areas and so on. At least, not in an environment that relies on specialty/skilled workers. When everyone is an interchangeable unit, this is suddenly possible.

So for a skilled worker, their renumeration combined with their ability to dedicate themselves to achieve a goal (skill mastery, degree, etc) overrides some of these concerns. Everyone wants to be happy at work, but in the end, they wouldn't call it 'work' if they have to pay you to show up. These folks can mentally compensate and still be exceptionally happy, productive workers without a perfect environment, or without being a perfect 'fit'.

Honest Tea Replaces Sugar Cane with Fruit ... - Organic Food Tips

Now Sweetened Only with Organic Fruit Juice, Available in 6.75 Fluid Ounce Pouches and 59 Ounce Multi-serve Bottles

(Bethesda, Md. ? September 20, 2012) - Honest Tea?, the nation?s top-selling organic bottled tea company, today unveiled its reformulated Honest Kids ?fruit-juice sweetened? line of beverages.? All five varieties of the popular pouches have been updated by removing the organic cane sugar and increasing the juice content.? Honest Kids beverages now have between 30-42 percent juice, an increase between 12-26 percentage juice, depending on variety. Nutritionally, the drinks remain at 40 calories per 6.75 fluid oz. pouch.

?Honest Kids has experienced dramatic growth to the point where it is almost a third of our business,? said co-founder and TeaEO Seth Goldman. ?We are excited we found a way to deliver the same not-too-sweet taste by sweetening the drinks only with fruit juice.?

Additionally, the graphics on Honest Kids pouches and cartons have been updated to feature fruit photography emphasizing the flavors in each variety. The updated look aligns the appearance of Honest Kids? with the clean, simple look of Honest Tea? and Honest Ade?.

The Honest Kids ?fruit-juice sweetened? line of beverages will also be available in a brand new, 59 oz. multi-serve bottle. The new bottle, with an easy to pour grip and embossed with the words ?HONEST?? and ?ORGANIC? on the neck, is designed for home consumption.? ?We received numerous requests from parents who wanted a larger package for families to enjoy at home,? Goldman said.

Honest Tea is continuing its focus on sustainability by actively promoting TerraCycle?s Drink Pouch Brigade? on cartons. The program, which was started by Honest Tea and TerraCycle in 2007, has been responsible for collecting more than 100 million used kids drink pouches from a number of manufacturers over the past five years. Those pouches have been recycled into new products including back packs, pencil cases and bike racks.

The company?s five Honest Kids varieties are: Berry Berry Good Lemonade, Goodness Grapeness, Tropical Tango Punch, Super Fruit Punch, and Appley Ever After.? The 8-pouch cartons will debut in natural food stores in October and grocery stores nationwide starting January 2013.? Three varieties ? Black women rally against voter ID laws

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Deidra Reese isn't waiting for people to come to her to find out whether they are registered to vote.

With iPad in hand, Reese is going to community centers, homes and churches in nine Ohio cities, looking up registrations to make sure voters have proper ID and everything else they need to cast ballots on Election Day.

"We are not going to give back one single inch. We have fought too long and too hard," said Reese, 45, coordinator of the Columbus-based Ohio Unity Coalition, an affiliate of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.

Reese is part of a cadre of black women engaged in a revived wave of voting rights advocacy four years after the historic election of the nation's first black president. Provoked by voting law changes in various states, they have decided to help voters navigate the system ? a fitting role, they say, given that black women had the highest turnout of any group of voters in 2008.

"We've forgotten our mothers went to three jobs, picked us up from school, put the macaroni and cheese on the table, got up and got somebody registered to vote," said actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, one of several women who participated in a strategy session this week during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual legislative conference in the nation's capital. Ralph is married to Pennsylvania state Sen. Vincent Hughes.

The political and financial power of black women is one of the themes of this year's four-day event. It will culminate Saturday with a keynote speech from one of the most visible black women in America, first lady Michelle Obama.

"It's time for us to lead the way because we voted in greater numbers than any other gender and race group last election, and we got to do the same this year," said Elsie Scott, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

Turnout among women of all races is generally higher than for men. In 2008, about 69 percent of eligible black female voters went to the polls, an increase of 5.1 percentage points over 2004, according to a study of census data on 2008 voters by the Pew Hispanic Center. That compares with 66.1 percent of white women.

African-American women, who number about 20 million in the U.S., have long been the largest group of Democratic voters in the country, said David Bositis, senior research associate with the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

In a room at the Washington Convention Center on Wednesday, the sense of urgency among the women was palpable. They noted that voter registration deadlines in some states are as early as Oct. 6, the last of them on Oct. 16. Few attendees accepted the argument that the new voting laws were intended to fight fraud, as supporters of those laws maintain.

Judith Browne-Dianis, co-director of The Advancement Project, said black women showed in 2008 they can turn out in record numbers. But in 2010, "we sat home and while we were sitting at home, there were others that were plotting and what they decided to do was to change the rules of the game."

The women invoke the name of abolitionist and women's suffragist Sojourner Truth, and repeat civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer's famous line ? "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired" ? as a rallying cry. They talk strategy about checking to see who's been purged from voter rolls or locating documents that voters need to get photo identification. All along, they remind voters of the time, before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law, when black people were kept from voting.

Barbara Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said a voter hotline set up by several groups already gets a thousand calls a day. Callers are typically people who don't know if they can vote, whether their felony conviction keeps them from voting or what ID is required in their state, if at all.

Her organization has created a computer app that allows people to verify their registration status, get help registering online, learn about voting requirements in their state, find polling places and receive other assistance.
