British army dog joins list of animal war heroes

LONDON (AP) ? British soldiers and military dogs gathered at a London army barracks Thursday to honor a fallen hero with selfless courage, nerves of steel ? and four legs.

Theo, a bomb-sniffing springer spaniel who died in Afghanistan on the day his soldier partner was killed, was posthumously honored with the Dickin Medal, Britain's highest award for bravery by animals.

Theo worked alongside Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, searching for roadside bombs in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Tasker, 26, died in a firefight with insurgents in March 2011, and Theo suffered a fatal seizure hours later. Tasker's mother, Jane Duffy, says the pair were inseparable. She's convinced Theo died of a broken heart.

"They'll be watching us, and they'll be so proud," she said. "I just wish they were here to get it themselves."

Since 1943, the Dickin Medal has recognized gallantry by animals serving with the military, police or rescue services. Some of these animal heroes:

CANINE COMMANDOS

Theo is the 28th dog to receive the medal, awarded by animal charity PDSA and named for its founder, Maria Dickin.

One of the earliest winners was Rip, a mongrel found abandoned in a bomb shelter and adopted by a London air raid warden. He was credited with finding more than 100 people trapped in rubble by German bombs during the 1940 Blitz.

Another World War II hero was Rob, a collie who joined British commandos in more than 20 parachute operations behind enemy lines in North Africa and Italy. His medal citation said that "his presence with these parties saved many of them from discovery and subsequent capture or destruction."

Dogs have also been honored for service in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and during terrorist attacks.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Apollo, a New York Police Department German shepherd, received the medal on behalf of all search and rescue dogs at the sites in New York and Washington, "for tireless courage in the service of humanity."

WINGED WARRIORS

Pigeons' homing instinct makes them excellent messengers, and more than 200,000 served with British forces during World War II. Some 32 were awarded the Dickin Medal for carrying back vital information from the frontline.

Feathered medal-winners include Gustav, a pigeon serving with the Royal Air Force, "for delivering the first message from the Normandy Beaches from a ship off the beach-head" on June 6, 1944, the day of the D-Day landings.

GI Joe, a member of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service, was honored for flying 20 miles (32 kilometers) in 20 minutes with a message that stopped U.S. planes bombing an Italian town occupied by British troops in October 1943, saving the lives of at least 100 Allied soldiers and many civilians.

HEROIC HORSES

Upstart, a London police horse, is one of three equine recipients of the medal.

He was honored for a World War II incident in which a German flying bomb exploded 75 yards away, "showering both horse and rider with broken glass and debris."

Despite this, "Upstart was completely unperturbed and remained quietly on duty with his rider," controlling traffic until calm was restored.

A FEARLESS FELINE

Only one cat has ever received the Dickin Medal.

Simon, a Royal Navy ship's mascot, was honored for his service on HMS Amethyst, a ship shelled by Chinese Communist forces on the Yangtze River in 1949.

Despite being seriously wounded by shrapnel, Simon returned to his rat-killing duties aboard the damaged ship, which was trapped for months in Chinese waters.

"Throughout the incident his behavior was of the highest order," the citation said.

Simon and the ship's crew were greeted as heroes when they made it back to England, but the cat died weeks before he was due to receive his medal.

NASA spacecraft sees huge burp at Saturn after large storm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.

Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.

Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."

First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.

Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).

According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.

"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.

A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.

"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.

Caffeine Levels in Energy Drinks May Be Higher Than Advertised

Energy drinks may contain more caffeine than their labels claim, according to a new report.

Researchers at Consumer Reports purchased cans of 27 popular energy drinks and shots online and at stores in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, and tested the caffeine levels in three samples of each product.

Caffeine levels in the drinks ranged between 6 and 242 milligrams per serving, and some containers contained more than one serving, they found.

By comparison, an 8-ounce cup of coffee generally contains about 100 mg of caffeine; eight ounces of cola contains about 25 mg.

The researchers found that 16 of the products listed a specific amount of caffeine on their labels. However, their own tests showed that five of these products ? Arizona Energy, Clif Shot Turbo Energy Gel, Nestl? Jamba, Sambazon Organic Amazon Energy and Venom Energy ? contained at least 20 percent more caffeine than stated. One sample, of Archer Farms Energy Drink Juice Infused, contained about 70 percent less caffeine than was listed on the label.

For the other 11 products, no specific amount of caffeine was given on the label. "Their blends may be proprietary," they wrote in their report.?[Full results: Caffeine Levels in Energy Drinks (Infographic)]

Moderate doses of caffeine, between 200 to 300 mg, aren't harmful for healthy adults, whereas heavy daily use, of more than 500 mg, can cause insomnia, fast heartbeat and muscle tremors, according to the Mayo Clinic. But people can vary widely in how much caffeine they can consume before experiencing unhealthy side effects.

Pregnant women are generally recommended to limit consumption to less than 200 mg daily (higher levels have been linked in some studies to an increased risk of miscarriage).

The American Academy of pediatrics recommends that children should limit their caffeine consumption to 100 milligrams a day, and should not drink energy drinks.

The benefits of caffeine include alleviating fatigue and increasing mental alertness. The compound can also improve concentration and focus.

Pass it on: Energy drinks' labels may stop short of revealing full caffeine content.

The Ideal Mortgage Amount Is $1 Million Dollars ... - Financial Samurai

Talin EstoniaWhoah, that?s crazy! I can hear some of you who don?t live in an expensive part of the world say. Meanwhile, some of you are surely thinking you can?t get anything livable with a $1 million mortgage. Funny how the internet brings everybody from everywhere together.

Back in 2002, a $1 million mortgage cost around $50,000 to $65,000 a year in interest expense given mortgage rates were 5%-6.5% for a 5/1 ARM or a 30-year fixed. Multiply the annual interest expense by three, and you get $150,000-$195,000, the minimum annual income recommended to take out such a loan.

Today, a $1 million mortgage costs around $26,500 to $35,000 a year in interest expense given mortgage rates are now 2.625%-3.5% for a 5/1 ARM or a 30-year fixed. Multiply the annual interest expense by three again and you get $79,500 to $105,000, a far cry from the $150,000-$195,000 you originally needed to make!

It is aggressive to think that someone who only makes $79,500 a year in gross salary can afford a $1 million mortgage, but it?s also absurd that one can borrow $1 million dollars nowadays for only 2.625%! I?m not recommending everyone with impecable credit scores, great financial habits, and steady savings rates all get $1 million mortgages. I?m just saying that it?s now possible for someone making $79,500 a year to service $1 million worth of debt at 2.625% if the bank approves.

REASONS WHY THE IDEAL MORTGAGE AMOUNT IS $1 MILLION BUCKS

1) The law says so. The maximum mortgage interest indebtedness is $1 million dollars according to the IRS. In other words, if you have a $2 million dollar mortgage that costs $70,000 a year in mortgage interest, only $35,000 of the mortgage interest can be deducted from your income. Your tax savings is simply $35,000 X tax rate. The IRS also stipulates that you can deduct the interest on a $100,000 Home Equity Line Of Credit if the money is used?other than to build, improve or purchase your home. Crazy but true.

2) Maximum government subsidy. The home mortgage interest deduction is one of the largest government subsidies available to all citizens. In an environment when all it seems like the government does is take, take, take, citizens get something tangible and immediate back from the government. The government helps subsidize your lifestyle and lower your taxes. To not take full advantage of such subsidy is a shame, unless you love paying taxes!

3) Keeps you disciplined. For those who live in expensive cities such as San Francisco and NYC, keeping a $1 million dollar mortgage limit helps keep you from going overboard and buying too much house. Plenty of nice houses now cost over $2 million dollars for example. By keeping your borrowing to $1 million, you are forced to come up with a $1 million down payment before you can buy such house. You might think going the standard 20% down ($400,000) and borrowing $1.6 million is fine, but it is not ideal. You start justifying what?s an extra $600,000 in debt at that price, losing your financial discipline. I can assure you that everything because more painful the more you borrow: less deductions, higher mortgage payment, and more stress.

4) Asymmetric risk and reward. In America, when you borrow a ton of money from a bank and can?t pay it back one day, you don?t get stoned to death, castrated, or impaled in the heart by a spear. Instead, you hand back the keys to the bank who agreed to take on your home as collateral in case of non payment. If you are lucky to live in a non-recourse state, the bank can?t go after your other assets! If you live in a recourse state, then a short-sale or foreclosure will temporarily slaughter your credit score for 3-7 years. Better your credit score then your private parts right? Meanwhile, if you happen to invest in the right cycle, you can make a massive amount of money when you finally sell or rent the property out without having to give the bank any of the upside! Isn?t America great?

5) You make closer to the ideal income. Based on my article, ?The Maximum Mortgage Indebtedness Depends On Income,? how much mortgage interest you can fully deduct is based on how much money you make. Make too much, and your mortgage interest deductions get phased out. Make too little, which is under $79,500 based on existing rates, and you will feel the strain of the mortgage payments. If you or your household make between $150,000-$300,000, you are in the sweet spot to take on a $1 million dollar mortgage. Be aware if have an adjusted gross income of over $166,800, your mortgage interest starts to get phased out. For every $100 of income over $166,800 you lose $3 of itemized deduction X 33.3% up to a maximum loss of 80 percent of your itemized deductions. Lower rates have moved everybody closer to the ideal income!

MORTGAGE AMOUNTS ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYBODY

If you live parts of the country which have wonderful $500,000 homes, then awesome! There is never a need to borrow $1 million dollars. The standard deduction of roughly $6,000 for singles and $12,000 for married couples is probably good enough for most. For those of you who live in expensive coastal cities, then consider $1 million dollars as the cap on how much you should borrow and calculate your mortgage payment to income ratio, loan-to-value ratio, and home value to cash left over after downpayment ratio.

Some of you reading this have liquid assets north of $1 million dollars. A $1 million dollar mortgage is therefore nothing to be afraid of because everything is just accounting. Your goal in this low interest rate environment is to minimize your debt interest expense by refinancing your mortgage and maximizing your government subsidies. Imagine refinancing your mortgage to 2.625% while making 16%+ returns on your investment guaranteed after rebalancing your portfolio?as I mentioned after QE3? You?re essentially borrowing money for free and then some!

Don?t be afraid of mortgage debt. Instead, cherish what the government has given us and live a wonderful life knowing you are optimizing your finances.

Readers, thoughts on the ideal mortgage amount? Does mortgage debt scare you? What does it say if the income range for the ideal mortgage is $150,000-$300,000? For purposes of this discussion, ?No mortgage? is not an answer.

Regards,

Sam

Japan's Softbank to buy 70 percent of Sprint for $20.1 billion

TOKYO | Mon Oct 15, 2012 7:01am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese mobile operator Softbank Corp said it will buy about 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp, the third-largest U.S. carrier, for $20.1 billion - the most a Japanese firm has spent on an overseas acquisition.

The deal, announced by Softbank's billionaire founder and chief Masayoshi Son and Sprint CEO Dan Hesse at a packed news conference in Tokyo on Monday, gives Softbank an entry into a U.S. market that still shows growth, while Japan's market is stagnating. It also gives Sprint the firepower to buy peers and build out its 4G network to compete better in a market dominated by AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Analysts have long said the U.S. telecoms industry needs consolidation, but few looked to Japan as a catalyst. Some investors worry Softbank is biting off more than it can chew.

But the 55-year-old Son, a rare risk-taker in Japan's often cautious business circles, is betting U.S. growth can offer relief from cut-throat competition in Japan's saturated mobile market. Combined, Softbank and Sprint will have 96 million users.

"It could be safe if you do nothing, and our challenge in the U.S. is not going to be easy at all. We must enter a new market, one with a different culture, and we must start again from zero after all we have built," he told the news conference.

"But not taking this challenge will be a bigger risk."

FIRE-POWER

Softbank said that as part of the deal it would buy $3.1 billion of bonds convertible into Sprint stock at $5.25 a share, while about 55 percent of existing Sprint shares would be exchanged for $7.30 per share in cash, with the transactions to be completed by mid-2013. Sprint shares closed Friday at $5.73.

Hesse, who will stay on as Sprint CEO, said the Softbank investment would give Sprint opportunities it hadn't had since he joined the firm in late-2007, and enable the U.S. firm to play a bigger role in future market consolidation.

"This is pro-competitive and pro-consumer in the U.S. because it creates a stronger No. 3 ... it competes with the duopoly of AT&T and Verizon. When you look at what Softbank has accomplished in Japan with the No. 3 carrier, it's something we can learn from," he said.

Softbank shares tumbled more than 8 percent earlier on Monday, closing down 5.3 percent at their lowest finish in 5 months. The stock has lost more than a fifth of its value - or $8.7 billion - since news first broke late last week of the firm's interest in Sprint.

On Monday, credit rating agency Moody's said it was reviewing Softbank's ratings for a possible downgrade, but some analysts said Son's gamble might pay off in the end.

"It's the same (market) reaction as when Softbank said it was going to buy Vodafone a few years ago. Everyone came out and said it was far too expensive," Fumiyuki Nakanishi, general manager of investment and research at SMBC Friend Securities, said ahead of the announcement. Softbank bought Vodafone's Japan unit for $15.5 billion in 2006.

"Son made a company worth 3 trillion yen, and now it will be worth 6 trillion yen. That's quite impressive, and I think investors will realize he's making the right decision down the road," said Nakanishi.

Four banks - Mizuho Financial Group Inc, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Deutsche Bank - have approved loans totaling 1.65 trillion yen ($21.1 billion) to Softbank, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Sprint, which has lost money in all of the last 19 quarters, has net debt of about $15 billion, while Softbank has net debt of about $10 billion. Brokers have warned that the deal could leave Softbank with "unacceptably high" gearing, a ratio of its debt to shareholder capital. Standard & Poor's has warned the deal "may undermine Softbank's financial risk profile" and would pressure its free operating cash flow for the next few years.

Reflecting those concerns, Softbank's 5-year credit default swap spreads - the cost of protecting its debt against default - widened to 267/327 basis points from around 160 basis points before the deal, and yields on its yen bonds have risen sharply.

NO CLEARWIRE OBLIGATION

Analysts have said that Softbank buying 70 percent of Sprint for $20 billion would imply the No. 3 U.S. wireless company was worth about $28.6 billion, some two-thirds greater than its market capitalization at Friday's close.

Sprint, which is going through a $7 billion upgrade of one of its networks, while closing its Nextel iDen network, could use some of the proceeds to buy the part of Clearwire Corp it doesn't already own, analysts have said. Clearwire has high-speed infrastructure that is attractive to mobile carriers struggling with the increase in data due to the rising numbers of smartphone users. Shares in Clearwire, 48 percent-owned by Sprint, soared on Friday.

Softbank said, however, that the deal did not require Sprint to take any action involving Clearwire.

An alliance with Sprint could also give Softbank leverage when dealing with Apple Inc, helping bolster its domestic position against KDDI Corp, which also offers the iPhone in Japan, and market leader NTT Docomo, which is yet to offer the Apple smartphone.

With Sprint in hand, Softbank may also look to acquire smaller U.S. carrier MetroPCS Communications, Japanese media have reported. Sprint has had a long interest in MetroPCS, which earlier this month agreed to merge with T-Mobile USA, part of Deutsche Telekom AG.

The Sprint deal takes outbound deals by Japanese firms to a record $75 billion this year, Thomson Reuters data shows, underscoring a strong appetite for overseas assets seemingly unaffected by signs of slowing global growth.

This is not the first Japanese foray into telecoms overseas. NTT Docomo racked up big losses after a string of failed investments in names like AT&T Wireless and Taiwan mobile operator KG Telecom in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Raine Group LLC, a boutique merchant bank focused on the technology, media and telecoms sector, and Mizuho Securities were lead financial advisers to Softbank.

New Mexico License Plan Could Backfire in 2013

New Mexico's policy of giving illegal immigrants driver's licenses could soon come back to bite the state's law-abiding residents when stringent new federal requirements for IDs take effect in January, the governor is warning.

With a key provision of the federal Real ID Act set to kick in on Jan. 15, Gov. Susana Martinez claims there will be no way to differentiate between state IDs issued to residents who furnish federally-required documentation and those issued to illegal immigrants based on less stringent requirements. Martinez is predicting the federal government will have no choice come Jan. 15, 2013, but to no longer recognize her state's licenses as valid identification at airport ticket counters or for entry into federal buildings or complexes such as the state's large Kirtland and Holloman Air Force.

?It?s deeply concerning that New Mexicans who work at our labs, get on an airplane, or need to show identification at any other federal facility will no longer be able to use their driver?s license to do so."

- New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez

?It?s deeply concerning that New Mexicans who work at our labs, get on an airplane, or need to show identification at any other federal facility will no longer be able to use their driver?s license to do so,? Martinez said after sending an Oct. 10 letter of inquiry about the act to Department of Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano. ??This is not just an inconvenience; it is an incredible burden on our citizens and our businesses, and on our ability to be competitive with our neighboring states.?

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005, to ensure authenticity of documents used to acquire a state-issued driver's license or identification card, but much of its thrust has been delayed. More than 15 states have actually passed legislation to refuse compliance with the act.

New Mexico and Washington are the only states which currently issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, and in New Mexico, a utility bill and any form of identification -- such as the Matricula Consular card, which is issued to Mexican nationals by their consulates -- is still all that is currently required. Under the Real ID Act, the federal government requires proof of citizenship for a driver's license and may not recognize other state IDs unless they are supported by such?documents as a birth certificate, Social Security number or passport. States that did comply with the criteria for the Real ID Act have extended deadlines, but New Mexico did not file the required information for an extension. A DHS spokesperson said the act will be enforced.

"DHS has every intention of maintaining the January 15, 2013, deadline," said Marsha Catron, DHS spokesperson.?"This applies to the state meeting requirements, not an individual."

According to the DHS, if a state completes a checklist which brings them into compliance with the Real ID Act, they will grant an extension for driver?s licenses until Dec.1, 2014, for those born after Dec.1, 1964, and Dec.1, 2017, for those born before Dec. 1, 1964.

Greg Blair, spokesman for Martinez, says if the Jan. 15 deadline comes without any sort of extension, the most obvious implications on New Mexicans are how they are able to use their driver?s licenses.

?TSA security screeners will no longer accept a New Mexico driver?s license as valid ID to board a plane. Individuals who have to present ID to enter a federal building ? such as Los Alamos National Lab or Sandia National Lab, which employ thousands of New Mexicans ? will no longer be able to use their New Mexico driver?s license,? Blair said. ?The implications are far-reaching, costly and certainly inconvenient.?

In 2003, then-Gov. Bill Richardson, pushed through the law approving the issuance of driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants in an attempt to decrease the number of uninsured drivers in the state. After nearly 10 years, there is little evidence the measure achieved the goal, say critics.

While Mexican officials staunchly defend the validity and reliability of the documents used to obtain the card, Martinez said it opens a door for the possibility of fraud. An estimated 49,000 undocumented immigrants live in New Mexico, and since the law went into effect, some 80,000 licenses have been issued to foreign nationals, many of whom are not from the state.

In June, 30 people were indicted in an alleged illegal driver's license ring where illegal immigrants from South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee came to New Mexico to get driver's licenses using fraudulent utility bills.

New Mexico state Sen. Tim Jennings (D), a staunch supporter of Richardson?s law, says he will to take a wait-and-see approach to find out if the DHS will actually enforce the act.

?They?ve postponed the Real ID Act in the past,? Jennings said. ?A lot of this comes about because the federal government fails to come up with coherent immigration reform then pushes it back on the states to decide what to do.?

He stands behind the premise of the law, which encouraged an increase in insured drivers in the state.

Jennings says he will not discount repealing the state?s law, but with the caveat Gov. Martinez and the federal government put into place a more reasonable policy.

How To Use Your Psychic Powers To Sell More Products | Content ...

Author: George W. Hutton | Total views: 114 Comments: 0
Word Count: 743 Date:

Rapport is essential to all sales. Without rapport, you are only going to sell things to people who are already desperate to buy it. But with rapport, you'll be able to explain exactly why your product is the best one available. And with strong enough rapport, your customer will believe you, and buy the product.

A great way to create rapport in a face to face sales meeting is through pacing. This means matching whatever they do. Match their body language. Match their rate of speech. If they move, you move. If they tilt their head, you tilt your head. This is incredibly powerful. You can walk through any cafe and quickly tell who's in rapport, and who isn't. Who's into each other, and who secretly wants to slap each other across the face.

How do you do this online? You can easily do this the same way. Just simply write what you know to be true in the mind of your reader. That way, the more they read, the more they'll say, "uh huh...uh huh..." to themselves over and over. So when you start describing your product, they'll be much more likely to follow along and click that magical "buy" button at the bottom.

How do you do this? With your psychic powers, of course!

Wait, what?

OK. This may upset some of you. If you truly believe in psychic powers, maybe you should read another article at this point.

Still here? Good.

There's something people use that is called "cold reading." It's a way to make it seem like you have a psychic view into their brain. But in reality, it's just some very accurate guesswork, coupled with some artfully vague language.

For example, pay close attention to the following sentence:

You are reading this sentence.

Pretty amazing, huh? I knew exactly what you were doing as you read that!

But wait, there's more.

Consider this:

You are reading this sentence, and maybe wondering how you can use this.

Wow, how did I do that?

First, I made a statement I knew had to be true. Then I made a guess about what you were thinking. And I prefaced that statement, about what you were thinking, with the word, "maybe."

Of course, I don't know much more about you. All I know is that you are reading this article. I don't know where you came from, who you are, what you want, or what you're interested in.

But if you've any kind of sales page, and you are getting any kind of targeted traffic, then you can deduce quite a bit about your readers. Do some digging, find out things about them that are very likely to be true. Throw in lots of words like, "maybe, perhaps, possibly," and write a couple paragraphs in the first part of your sales letter that pace their experience as much as possible.

Remember to only write things that have a very high probability of being true.

For example, if you have a site on "dog training," and you aren't sure what kind of specific training they're after, don't write anything too specific.

For example, consider this:

I know you've come to this site because you've got that cute poodle with the pink highlights that you'd like to train how to sit up and spin in circles whenever you wag those chocolate flavored dog biscuits in front of her.

It won't work very well.

But consider this:

I know you've got a dog you'd like to train. Maybe you've looked at some other material for help, but up to now you haven't found anything that's satisfied what you really need. Obviously, you have some specific things you'd like your dog to do. And you're not exactly sure how to train your dog to do those things. But with the training I provide, many of our customers report amazing results. Results they say they couldn't get anywhere else.

See how that works? Vague enough to be true for a lot of people. And it leads right into why your product is the best.

It's almost like you're reading their mind!

If you need persuasive sales copy that will quickly move your readers to action, then head on over to our landing page today. You'll find affordable sales copy that will quickly pay for itself. The sooner you get sales copy on your site, the sooner you'll start making increased conversions and sales.

To improve the care and diagnosis of the infants, children, teens and expectant mothers of Miller Children?s, donations made through this first-time philanthropic event will directly benefit these dedicated programs. iWalk participants are encouraged to form teams, actively fundraise and select the department to which their hard work will contribute.

The departments of Miller Children?s benefitting from this show of community support include the Center for Women, KidsCare ? providing unrestricted funds to meet the greatest needs at Miller Children?s ? Review of La Placeta, Santa Cruz de la Palma's Jazzy Traditional ...

If I were a restaurant owner in Santa Cruz de la Palma, I?d be Incredible Hulk coloured at the thought of La Placeta?s location. Enviable just doesn?t cut the mustard.

On the seafront side, La Placeta?s 18th century fa?ade forms part of one of the biggest attractions of La Palma?s capital, Los Balcones; a row of historic buildings whose antique painted balconies, adorned with tumbling plants, are a super magnet for cameras. La Placeta is one of the most colourful of Los Balcones, with a veritable jungle of potted plants hanging from its delightfully rickety looking balcony.

La Placeta Restaurant, Santa Cruz de la Palma

But, if that wasn?t enough, cut through a narrow passage and La Placeta also looks over one of the most picturesque little plazas in Santa Cruz de la Palma; the restaurant?s tables and chairs decorate a cobbled square and trickling fern fountain,

Let?s face it, anyone who sets eyes on La Placeta doesn?t need me to sell it to them.

Inside the charm continues with deeply polished floorboards and staircase and tasteful furnishings that are lifted by contemporary and witty touches. A fashion parade of stylish images accompany me up the staircase to intimate dining rooms whose open, latticed windows offer a light sea-breeze relief from stifling September temperatures whilst a jazzy soundtrack soothes my soul.

Within seconds of entering I?m relaxed and enjoying the ambience ? this is exactly my type of restaurant. It?s classy, stylish, historic and cool ? but totally unpretentious or fussy. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails or simply just a coffee at La Placeta; they welcome all-comers.

Enticing though a beautifully tasteful wrapping is, it?s nothing if it can?t deliver a culinary present to match.

The Food at La Placeta
The menu is mainly traditional Canarian in personality but with a worldly wise influence; so that beside fried Camembert and local favourites there is hummus and even a selection of vegetarian dishes. The wine list has a distinctly Iberian flavour with a good selection of La Palma varieties.

Exhibit A ? Queso del Pais Tricolor
I?m a sucker for grilled cheese drizzled with mojos (Canarian sauces generally made with red peppers or cilantro) and honey but sometime the cheese can border on being rubbery in texture. Not so with La Placeta, the queso fresco is indeed fresh and soft, so that the flavours of the picante chunky mojos and sweet honey blend beautifully. They?re helped along by a cherry red bottle of Vega Norte that is summery light to drink ? dangerously so. There?s a real possibility of it disappearing before the main course arrives.

Exhibit B ? Crema de Calabaza
The gold and creamy pumpkin soup is light, peppery and full? of savoury flavour. I rarely opt for soup when eating out but this one makes me rethink that policy.

Exhibit C ? Conejo en Salsa
Rabbit in a rich sauce is a real Canarian speciality. Normally you see it as Conejo en Salmorejo on Canarian menus; La Placeta?s version is slightly different from the norm. Their rabbit sauce consists of red and green peppers, lentils, mushrooms and almonds and came with papas arrugadas (traditional small, salted potatoes in their skins). It?s a rich, hearty and tasty dish and I?m a big rabbit fan. But I don?t do this one justice. The combination of grilled cheese and soup (plus too much bread spread with more-ishly herby butter) beforehand leaves me a bit too stuffed to fully appreciate it.

Conejo en Salsa, La Placeta Restaurant, Santa Cruz de la Palma

Exhibit D ? Pr?ncipe Alberto
Despite being stuffed I feel it would be rude to say no to a local La Palma postre. With ingredients that include chocolate, fresh cream, sponge biscuits, hazelnuts and almonds, Pr?ncipe Alberto sounds like the sort of concoction that could push me into Monty Python Meaning of Life territory. But in reality it is fluffy white-cloud light ? it positively floats into the mouth bypassing the tongue and making straight for the taste buds. It is simply one of those orgasmic puds.

Principe Alberto, La Placeta Restaurant, Santa Cruz de la Palma

I think it?s fair to say that La Placeta?s ingredients match the promise of its oh so attractive wrapping.

Jayson Werth?of the Washington Nationals?leaps onto home plate to score on his solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in?Game Four of the National League Division Series Thursday in Washington.

By HOWARD FENDRICH

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:04 p.m. ET Oct. 11, 2012

WASHINGTON - The Washington Nationals signed Jayson Werth to show them how to win. His game-ending homer Thursday night extended their surprising season.

Werth led off the bottom of the ninth inning by driving Lance Lynn's 13th pitch into the left-field stands to give the Nationals a 2-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals and force a Game 5 in their NL division series.

As he circled the bases, Werth raised his right index finger in a "No. 1" gesture, while the announced crowd of 44,392 roared. The other Nationals raced out of the dugout to greet Werth, who tossed his red batting helmet high in the air before jumping on home plate and being enveloped by a bouncing collection of thrilled teammates.

The best-of-five series will end Friday night in Washington, with the winner advancing to face the San Francisco Giants in the NL championship series. The starters will provide a rematch of Game 1, which Washington won, with Gio Gonzalez on the mound for the Nationals, and Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals.

"It will be a lot like today. It's what it's all about. It's what you play all season for and what you work out all winter for and what you get to spring training early for," Werth said. "We have a chance tomorrow to take that next step. I know my teammates will be ready and the city will, too."

The homer was Werth's first with the Nationals but 14th of his career in the postseason. He won the 2008 World Series and a string of division titles with the Philadelphia Phillies before moving to Washington as a free agent before last season on a $126 million contract that stunned much of baseball.

He gets a ton of credit for helping steer a quick turnaround: The Nationals lost 100 games in 2008 and 2009, but led the majors with 98 wins and won their division this year.

"When I signed here, my first day here, I went to a Capitals game, a hockey game, (and) the place was packed. Somebody said, `Just a few short years ago, this place was empty.' So I knew that a winning ballclub would bring the fans," Werth said, "and here we are, two years later and they're showing up and it's awesome."

Werth's shot provided a sudden end to a classic postseason contest filled with tremendous pitching. Each team managed only three hits.

Lynn, usually a starter for St. Louis but a reliever in these playoffs, was making his third appearance of this series. He was the Cardinals' third pitcher - and faced only one batter - and manager Mike Matheny was asked afterward why he didn't use closer Jason Motte.

"If we were at home, it would have been a very easy decision to bring in Motte," Matheny said, explaining that if he used up his closer and St. Louis went ahead later in the game, a reliever not used to getting a save would have needed to try.

"Had a lot of confidence in Lance. He came in throwing the ball well. Werth just put together a very good at-bat," Matheny added.

Cardinals batters did not down the stretch. They made eight consecutive outs via strikeouts against three Nationals pitchers - Jordan Zimmermann, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen, who threw the top of the ninth and got the win.

Storen walked No. 8 hitter Pete Kozma with two outs, before getting pinch hitter Matt Carpenter out on a twisting, stumbling overhead catch by shortstop Ian Desmond, who wound up sliding on his belly in short left field. When Desmond rose, he threw the ball into the stands and yelled.

Moments later, Werth had all the red-clad, towel-twirling spectators yelling, too, thanks to the way he turned on a 96 mph fastball. For much of the game, the hometown fans were rather quiet, perhaps dreading a sooner-than-expected end to their team's better-than-expected year.

Starters Kyle Lohse, who won the wild-card playoff game for St. Louis against Atlanta last week, and Ross Detwiler were both superb.

Lohse lasted seven innings, allowing one run and two hits. Detwiler went six, with one unearned run and three hits all he conceded.

Lohse was replaced by Mitchell Boggs, who struck out pinch hitter Chad Tracy with a man on to end the eighth, before giving way to Lynn.

While nearly to a man ? except, naturally, for Werth ? the young Nationals are new to this sort of thing, the wild-card Cardinals have quite the postseason pedigree: Over the past two years, St. Louis is 5-0 in games where it faces elimination, including must-have victories in Games 6 and 7 of the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers.

"We got a lot of experience, a lot of confidence built. Just going to the World Series and winning the World Series, having to play a Game 7 and come out on top - you're seeing a lot of us use that experience so far in this postseason," St. Louis first baseman Allen Craig said. "We had a tough, do-or-die game in Atlanta and came out on top, and after we won that game, I think we started to feel really good about ourselves and get that feeling like we had last year."

Washington entered Game 4 with all sorts of problems at the plate in the series: 3 for 24 with runners in scoring position, 30 men left on base, a total of only seven runs. Despite those struggles, Nationals manager Davey Johnson didn't make any changes at all to his lineup.

As it turned out, the Nationals didn't have an at-bat with anyone in scoring position all game. Both runs came on solo shots.

Cleanup hitter Adam LaRoche put Washington ahead 1-0 in the second, fouling off three consecutive pitches before depositing Lohse's full-count 92 mph sinker onto the grass berm beyond center field.

In the third, the Cardinals tied it without a hit. Detwiler walked Kozma - a rookie Johnson referred to as "Cosmos" before the game - and after a sacrifice bunt, Jon Jay reached on an error when Desmond booted a grounder. Carlos Beltran's sac fly scored Kozma.

Detwiler is the fourth member of Washington's postseason staff - odds are he wouldn't have been in the rotation if Stephen Strasburg were still pitching, instead of shut down - but he was terrific. With his 104th and last pitch, Detwiler got Daniel Descalso to ground out.

In came Zimmermann for the first relief appearance of his career. Zimmermann, who started and lost Game 2, said beforehand that he'd never even set foot in the bullpen area before, but added: "I'll be ready to go if the phone rings."

Was he ever. Zimmermann struck out all three batters in the seventh. In the eighth, it was Clippard's turn. The pitcher who lost the closer's job after a rough late-season stretch came in and also got each of his three outs on Ks, working around a walk and leaving the mound punching the air after getting Yadier Molina to swing through a 94 mph fastball.

And in the ninth, Storen added two more strikeouts before Desmond's great grab.

NOTES: Nationals rookie Bryce Harper was hitless in three at-bats, leaving him at 1 for 18 in the series. ... In Game 3 on Wednesday, Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter became only the second starting pitcher in baseball history to win a postseason game after not having any wins during the regular season, according to STATS LLC. The other? Virgil Trucks, who won Game 2 of the 1945 World Series for the Tigers against the Cubs. STATS said 14 relievers have done it. Carpenter missed most of the season, making his debut on Sept. 21 after surgery to cure numbness on his right side. He made only three starts in the regular season, going 0-2. ... Home umpire Jim Joyce, who missed a call at first base in Game 3, was booed during Thursday's pregame introductions.

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan pull up a couple of chairs for a vice presidential debate that has mushroomed in importance since Mitt Romney's strong showing in the first presidential faceoff. This time, it's the Obama team looking to put the brakes on the other guy's momentum.

The veep showdown matches up two skilled politicians with strong policy credentials and very different styles. It's 69-year-old Biden's folksy appeal and solid vice presidential portfolio vs. 42-year-old Ryan's intensity and extensive knowledge of the federal budget and economy from 14 years in Congress.

Like the second installment in a miniseries, it will help to shape the campaign narrative until Romney and Obama themselves meet up again Tuesday. Obama is eager to change the vibe after his lackluster performance in the first debate and Romney's recent gains in the polls. Romney, for his part, is hoping that a strong Ryan performance will help propel Republicans forward on an energetic drive through the campaign's final weeks.

The 90-minute debate at Centre College, a liberal arts school with just 1,340 students in tiny Danville, is sure to draw a television audience of tens of millions. But it's unlikely to eclipse the 70 million who tuned in to watch Biden face off with Republican firebrand Sarah Palin four years ago.

That debate was more of a curiosity: It allowed Palin to outdo Biden in folksiness and recover from a series of painfully awkward media interviews but did little to alter the trajectory of the race.

"Normally vice presidential debates are good political theater and sort of interesting from a talent scout standpoint, as you evaluate the up-and-comers on the political stage," says Alan Schroeder, author of a book on presidential debates. "But this year could be different because of the negative reviews of Obama's performance. That heightens expectations for this second debate."

Thursday was a rare day when the political activities of the running mates were taking center stage and those of Obama and Romney were seen as secondary. But with just 26 days left until the election and the race still tight, neither Obama nor Romney was completely ceding the spotlight. The president was hunting for votes in Florida while his GOP opponent devoted time to North Carolina, another battleground.

Thursday's debate, moderated by Martha Raddatz of ABC News, will cover both foreign and domestic topics. The debate is to be divided into nine 10-minute segments. At the outset, Raddatz will ask an opening question, and each candidate will have two minutes to respond.

Romney and Obama both predicted strong performances by their No. 2s.

"I think Paul Ryan will do great," Romney told supporters at a town hall meeting Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He said the debates offer people a rare chance to see the candidates directly, unfiltered by misleading and negative ads.

The GOP nominee said he'd seen some of the anti-Romney TV ads running in Ohio that morning, and added, "It's a good thing I don't do that very often because my blood pressure would be very high."

Obama, in a radio interview Wednesday with Tom Joyner, said he'd been "too polite" in his debate with Romney ? a sure sign that Biden won't be going easy on Ryan. And that Obama won't make the same mistake in the next two presidential debates, on Tuesday in Hempstead, N.Y., and Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

"We've got four weeks left in the election, and we're going to take it to him," Obama said.

Later, in an interview with "ABC World News," Obama minimized the importance of his poor first debate performance, saying: "Gov. Romney had a good night. I had a bad night. It's not the first time I've had a bad night."

He added, "What's important is the fundamentals of what this race is about haven't changed."

The president, who had tried to lower expectations for his own performance ahead of last week's debate, predicted in his radio interview that Biden would be "terrific."

Ryan signaled he's ready for whatever Biden sends his way.

"I'm not intimidated, I'm actually excited about it," he said on CNN.

Both Biden and Ryan head into the debate with vulnerabilities: Biden must rein in a freewheeling manner that can be endearing but also produces plenty of gaffes. Ryan hasn't been in a campaign debate for more than a decade and is light on foreign policy experience, a sharp contrast to the vice president, a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Ryan also will need to find a way to reinforce Romney's policy positions without selling out his own, more conservative credentials.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden signaled in advance that Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, would distance himself from his past proposals for sharp budget cuts.

"You have to remember that there is a Romney-Ryan ticket and there's one presidential candidate ? there's one person at the top of the ticket ? so the focus again will be on what Gov. Romney's plan is for reforming Washington," Madden said.
