Laptop usage reduces fertility in men, study reveals | Face of Malawi

Could using your laptop be shrinking your chances of having kids? New research seems to think so.

The WiFi signals from your laptop may be damaging your swimmers, reports a recent study in the journal of Fertility and Sterility. The researchers gathered semen samples from 29 men and placed them underneath a laptop connected to WiFi. After monitoring the semen samples for 4 hours, the results showed that a quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming and 9 percent showed significant DNA damage. There?s new evidence that laptops can put the heat on male fertility.

The new study indicates men who use laptops on their laps may be lowering their chances of fatherhood, CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton said on ?The Early Show.?

She pointed out that a recent study in the journal Fertility and Sterility showed the heat from laptops could be overheating testicles. Earlier research found that high temperatures can affect sperm quality.

Computers generate heat and heat can affect sperm, Ashton noted. In the latest study, researchers used thermometers on 29 healthy male volunteers balancing a laptop on their knees. When their knees were together with the laptop perched on top, it took only 28 minutes for the scrotum?s temperature to elevate by almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit. The researchers didn?t then test the men?s sperm. But earlier research has shown that heating the scrotum about the same as the new test did is enough to damage sperm.

The study said use of a laptop pad didn?t really decrease the heat, but sitting with the legs apart by 70 degrees did lower the temperature. Really, the best way to beat this heat is to use the laptop on a desk.

Male fertility can also be affected by genetic, biological, or sexual problems ? but, some of the everyday causes of low sperm count include overheating testicles by spending too much time in the hot tub or sauna, using certain medications, such as those for depression or high blood pressure, smoking and alcohol use, and stress, which affects hormones.

Up to half of all infertility cases have to do with the male, Ashton notes, so it?s important for the man to get evaluated if a couple is having trouble conceiving ? which is usually marked by one year of trying. Getting evaulated by a urologist or specialist can help couples make decisions about possible treatments or therapies.

This isn?t the first study that assumed laptops could be frying your fluids. After monitoring subjects who spent 60 minutes with a running laptop on their thighs, State University of New York researchers found that the computer heated up to nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit?which made the temperatures in the scrotum increase by 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

How exactly does that affect your boys? According to a European fertility study, an increase of 33 degrees Fahrenheit could reduce your sperm count by nearly 40 percent.

?When looking at the big picture, any type of applied heat to the scrotum is bad,? explains Larry I. Lipshultz, M.D., chief of the division of male reproductive medicine and a professor of urology at Baylor College of Medicine. ?Men really need to be more conscious when it comes to items such as hot tubs, heating pads, and heated car seats?basically anything that will put direct heat to the scrotum.?

So what are some other contributors that could leave your boys shooting blanks? Check out these surprising items that may be damaging your goods.

Cell Phones. Although we?re not blaming the WiFi in this case, the culprit is similar with cell phones. Researchers believe that the radiation from the cell phone?s electromagnetic frequency (EMF) potentially could be damaging sperm. Turkish researchers collected samples of human sperm and subjected it to 1 hour of cell phone EMF radiation. The results showed that the exposure caused sperm abnormalities; mainly the sperm were having trouble attaching to eggs. As long as the cell phone isn?t within close proximity to your boys, though, your sperm should be safe from the radiation.

Canned Food. It?s not so much about the products you?re buying, but what the product is packed in. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility found that men who had higher levels of bisphenol-A (or BPA, the chemical that?s found in the lining of food and beverage containers) in their urine were more likely to have low-quality sperm. The researchers monitored two groups of men, one which was exposed to BPA and one that was not. The results: Those exposed to the chemical had the lowest sperm measure. According to the research, BPA behaves a lot like estrogen in the male body?meaning it will offset the functioning of male hormones. Thus the participants who had the most BPA in their system had a lower sperm count, fewer live sperm, and poor sperm quality (meaning the sperm had trouble swimming).

Muscle Enhancers. Within the health community, steroids are already classified as a fitness pitfall. But if the disapproval of others isn?t enough to get you off the juice, maybe the thought of infertility will. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, when taking anabolic steroids, the testicles tend to shrink, causing the production of male hormones to be disrupted. ?Whether it?s a pill, a gel, or an injection, men need to realize that taking these enhancements can have extremely negative effects on their reproductive systems,? says Dr. Lipshultz. ?It literally turns off sperm production.?

Other ways men can optimize their fertility include staying in good general health. Also, it might be a good idea to take a multivitamin with zinc and folic acid, which are important for sperm production. Eat fruits and veggies rich in antioxidants, which may play a role. Reduce stress ? that can really affect your sexual function and ? you guessed it ? get regular exercise, but not too much. Men who do extreme exercise show a drop in sperm quality. The same holds true for weight. Watch your weight, but too much or too little body fat may disrupt reproductive hormones.

Even fit baby boomers won't escape heart problems

(AP) ? Here's a reality check for health-conscious baby boomers: Even among those in good shape, at least 1 in 3 will eventually develop heart problems or have a stroke.

The upside is that that will happen about seven years later than for their less healthy peers.

The findings come in an analysis of five major studies involving nearly 50,000 adults aged 45 and older who were followed for up to 50 years.

The best odds are in the healthiest adults ? those who don't smoke, have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Still, among 55-year-olds in that category, about a third can expect to develop heart or other cardiovascular problems as they age.

Dr. Vincent Bufalino, a Chicago area cardiologist and spokesman for the American Heart Association, said the study is "a wake-up call that this disease is very prevalent in the United States and even if you're doing a good job, you're not immune."

The researchers estimated risks older people face for developing these ailments in their lifetime, or by their 80s or 90s. They also estimated how many years they'll live free of heart disease and related problems, depending on the most common risk factors.

Pooling follow-up data from the five analyzed studies, the researchers found that the healthiest 45-year-olds lived up to 14 years longer free of heart ailments than those with at least two risk factors. The healthiest 55-year-olds lived up to about seven years longer than their less healthy peers.

The study was published online Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association and released in connection with the American Heart Association conference meeting in Los Angeles. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute paid for the research.

The authors estimated higher lifetime risks than previous studies, but their analysis involved a broader range of ailments, including heart failure and strokes.

While prevalence of heart disease and related deaths have declined nationwide in recent years, more than 82 million Americans ? roughly one-third ? have some form of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association.

Most people in the analysis had high blood pressure or at least one of the other risk factors.

The results shouldn't be discouraging, said lead author Dr. John Wilkins, an assistant professor of preventive medicine and cardiology at Northwestern University's medical school in Chicago. Maintaining an optimal lifestyle, by eating sensibly and staying active, is still the best way to live a long, healthy life, he said.

Heart disease remains the nation's leading cause of death, and the study reinforces the idea that "cardiovascular disease is part of the aging process," said Cleveland Clinic heart specialist Dr. David Frid, who was not involved in the research. Bodies wear out, "and ultimately, just exposure to living is going to cause people to develop some of these underlying problems," Frid said.

FTSE rises after earnings lift

LONDON (Reuters) - The FTSE 100 rose on Tuesday, buoyed by some encouraging earnings reports but with trade cautious ahead of a tight U.S. presidential election.

The FTSE 100 was up 39.26 points, or 0.7 percent, at 5,878.32 by 1145 GMT, after slipping 0.5 percent on Monday in thin volume.

Marks & Spencer rose 1 percent after the bellwether British retailer beat profit forecasts. Shares in the company have risen 14 percent over the last three months, lifted by persistent speculation regarding a possible offer from private equity or a sovereign wealth fund.

The UK retail sector is facing significant headwinds, demonstrated by a sharp deceleration of British retail sales in October, according to the British Retail Consortium, and there risk of profit taking on the share price.

Despite this, there are "a number of long-term drivers of capital value and dividends that lead us to retain a positive stance over a broader horizon," Clive Black, analyst at Shore Capital, said, citing new channels in beauty and e-commerce products.

He also saw scope for substantial free cash flow in the long term and potential from underperforming core womenswear.

Technology firm ARM gained 3.5 percent on reports that Apple may use the company's chips in their desktop range.

The company also said it would contribute $167.5 million to a consortium to acquire the rights to a MIPS Technologies' portfolio of hundreds of patents. ARM traded over 120 percent of its average 90 day volume by 1120 GMT.

Elsewhere, InterContinental Hotels, the world's biggest hotelier, also gained on the back of good results, adding 1.7 percent after it unveiled operating profit of $167 million in the quarter to the end of September, marginally beating consensus forecasts.

This came as the British-based group said it is opening up talks on the sale of its New York Barclay hotel to a wider group of prospective buyers after holding lengthy exclusive talks with one group.

By 1130 GMT, trading volumes were at a mere 28 percent of the 90 day average, which itself has been suppressed by weak activity over the summer, as investors awaited the outcome of Tuesday's presidential election in the U.S. before taking

"Markets will be very quiet today with traders watching the U.S. elections above anything else," said Lex van Dam, hedge fund manager at Hampstead Capital, which manages around $500 million of assets.

"The topic for the next two months will be how the politicians are going to avoid the fiscal cliff (automatic budget cuts) which might be easier if there is a clear winner today."

We're more passive than we predict when sexually harassed, new study shows

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? Sexual harassment is devastating in and of itself for its victims, but new research shows there can be an even more insidious and troubling consequence that goes along with it.

When confronted with sexual harassment, we don't stand up for ourselves to the extent we believe we will, and because we use false predictions as a benchmark, we condemn others who are passive in the face of sexual harassment, according to a new study co-authored by Ann Tenbrunsel, professor of business ethics at the University of Notre Dame.

In "Double Victimization in the Workplace: Why Observers Condemn Passive Victims of Sexual Harassment," forthcoming in Organization Science, Tenbrunsel and researchers from the University of Utah and Brigham Young and Northwestern universities conducted five studies that explored observers' condemnation of passive victims.

Pointing to the 1991 Senate con?rmation hearings for Clarence Thomas' appointment to the Supreme Court, the researchers note that Anita Hill testi?ed she had been sexually harassed by Thomas during his tenure as head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She testi?ed that despite being harassed numerous times years before, at no point did she confront Thomas about his behavior or take any action against the harassment. Her claim of repeated sexual harassment and perpetual inaction led to public suspicion with and condemnation of Anita Hill.

Far from being an isolated incident, the case illustrates a trend that prevails even today.

"If we can increase the accuracy of our predictions and realize we won't stand up for ourselves as often as we would like to think, we will be less condemning of other victims," Tenbrunsel says.

In the first two studies, observers predicted they would be more confrontational than victims typically are, and this led to greater judgment of other passive victims, including unwillingness to work with them and to recommend them for a job.

The third study identi?ed the failure to consider what may motivate victims to be passive, and the final two studies reduced condemnation of passive sexual harassment victims by highlighting their likely motivations at the time of the harassment and by having participants recall a past experience of their own when they did not act in the face of intimidation in the workplace, a situation related to but distinct from sexual harassment.

The results from these studies add insights into the causes and consequences of victim condemnation and help explain why passivity in the face of harassment -- the predominant response -- is subject to so much scorn.

Tenbrunsel, the Rex and Alice A. Martin Professor of Business Ethics at Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business and director of the University's Institute for Ethical Business Worldwide, is co-author of the book "Blind Spots: Why We Fail to do What's Right and What to do About it." She specializes in decision making and negotiations, with a particular emphasis on ethics.

Hulu.com: The 20 Definitive Videos of the 2012 Election Cycle (So You Don't Have to Think About It Ever Again)

Wow. We're here.

Sure, we're now all "convicted felons" (whatever that means) after an old lady got in the path of that TV we were forced to dismantle because we saw our 15th consecutive campaign ad in the waiting room of that dentist's office.

But we've made it. Tuesday is Election Day and we are still alive, just not allowed to leave the house for a little while, all of us.

Thankfully, there are Internet videos for that. So we've compiled this definitive list of the 20 best videos of the 2012 election cycle. Then you never have to think about this time in your life ever again.

20 - Herman Cain: An American Presidency - The Daily Show

If you are a registered Republican and you voted for anyone other than Hermain Cain in the primaries, please slap yourself across the face. Whoever our next president is going to be, it's unlikely he'll be as able to defend us against Moon Nazis as capably as President Cain would have. Seriously, though, where was this Herman Cain during his campaign? Less seriously, why are electric toothbrushes so expensive now?

19 - GOP Jeopardy - The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Jay Leno made this by himself on Final Cut Pro. It took him 16 months to finish it and when it was done he sped off in a 1957 Buick Roadmaster before he stopped in a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Reno just to cry.

18 - Obama Anger Translator - Key & Peele

The first time you saw one of these you thought, "Wait, this really feels racist to me." Then the second time you saw one you thought, "Is it just me or is this still racist?" Then the third time they made a funny one and you had too many priorities to really remember the first two times, and now here you are typing this on a Blackberry while you wait for a guy named Scouling Lou to sell you Adderall in an alley.

17 - Herman Cain Denies Future Allegations - Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Wasn't America better when we were making sausage pizza jokes about Herman Cain instead of resigning ourselves to the reality that we'll all be working for one of six companies by 2024 while everything's hot and Detroit will have turned into actual Robocop but with Buick LeSabres?

16 - Kristen Wiig as Michele Bachmann as Batboy - Saturday Night Live

After the Newsweek cover, all the debates and the interviews, we remember when we first met Representative Bachmann and understand why the director had to tell her, "Naah, it's OK, Mrs. Bachmann. You don't have to look straight at the camera. Looking off to the side is just fine."

15 - Governor Dunston - 30 Rock

We elect our politicians to lead and inspire us. But, all too frequently, they just make us angry. That's why TV shows parodying said politicians is so necessary. It gives us the ability to laugh at them, thereby distracting us from the stuff that they're doing that would only make us angrier. We already go to the batting cages four times a week to deal with all of the politics anger and our families are starting to worry about us. That said, we're almost, as a country, in the 80-MPH cages, which is really, really cool, trust us.

14 - Joe Biden: Grounded for Life - Saturday Night Live

Who knew that a passing comment on an early Sunday morning news show could finally get President Obama to say something definitive about a major civil rights issue? Vice President Biden did. And he didn't even have to swear this time.

13 - The Undecided Voter - Saturday Night Live

The media have been very unfair to the undecided voters of this country. Imagine the lengths you would have to go to in order to avoid television, the Internet, and even friends and family for months. You just can't understand until you've lived a day in their shoes, spending hours before every square meal deciding what to eat, only to then have to decide which utensils to use. Choices like that can be crippling, so how about showing a little compassion, okay?

12 - Stephen Colbert is Running for President of South Carolina - The Colbert Report

This was easily the brightest glimmer of hope the American electoral process has seen since Lincoln. Nobody is actually sure if he was kidding or not, but I'm definitely holding out for a Colbert/Stewart 2016 Campaign. I will not leave the house until they are elected.

11 - Who Won Last Night's Debate (That Didn't Happen)? - Jimmy Kimmel Live

Look at Jimmy Kimmel, bragging that he found all these clairvoyant time travelers on Hollywood Boulevard. Look, I'm not putting it past him. I met a time traveler on Hollywood Boulevard once. He was dressed as Spiderman and I gave him $2,000.

10 - The 2012 GOP/Cat Debate - South Park

Cats never lose things like this.

9 - Joe Biden's Bad Lip Reading - BadLipReading

Only one video this election season has the guts to ask the real questions, like, "Is that Tammy Vilanche?" I don't know, Joe Biden, is it?

8 - Stephen Colbert Invents a Fox News Story - The Colbert Report

"Even more troubling: Why does Peter Johnson Jr. have a name that's three euphemisms for penis?" It's been three weeks since this aired, Peter. Why won't you break your silence? The public has the right to know. Yes, that says "public." I checked three times. You don't have to look again. Thank you for your concern.

7 - Mike Tyson as Herman Cain - FunnyOrDie

Okay, fine, we'll just link you to the GIF of him smiling.

6 - Did Media Treat Michele Bachmann Unfairly Because She's an Insane Woman? - Onion Network News

I mean, it's no "I Got What America Needs Right Here" by Jimmy Carter, but The Onion still hasn't been wrong, and I would let that staff watch my children in a heartbeat, mostly because I don't have children, and if I did, I probably would let almost anyone watch them. I have not yet developed paternal instincts WOOH SPRING BREAK 2013!

5 - The Annex of Bulls**t Mountain - The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Thank God for Jon Stewart. I was about to get on this mountain. Turns out it's nothing like Thunder Mountain. Thanks a lot, Yelp.

4 - Clint Eastwood Vs. The Chair - Saturday Night Live

Heaven forbid Washington hog all the crazy. Just when the three ring circus of an election was at its zaniest, lovable Hollywood curmudgeon Clint Eastwood showed up to yell at a chair. We have no idea why. Apparently no one, and we mean no one, tells Dirty Harry he can't do something. And get off his lawn.

3 - Jimmy Kimmel at the White House Press Correspondents' Dinner - C-SPAN

This is the best thing on this list and most worthy of your time, but I'm not sure it really fits in with the general watered-down shlock that surrounds it, so we're pushing it down so you'll likely never see it.

Love,
Congress.

2 - GOP Debate: Round II - Saturday Night Live

Look, it was hard to narrow these SNL debate sketches down this election cycle. There were so many. But this one allows us to tell you to Google "Santorum" again for the first time in six months or so. It's back to what you want it to be.

We were so understanding, as a country, allowing that man to ruin our favorite Google search for a whole two months there. We let him wear those sweaters in public in the spring, too, when it was hot, just so he could hide all that shame, and no one even said anything.

What a caring, accepting nation comprised solely of understanding, wonderful, compassionate adults. And, also, Rick Santorum.

1 - Big Bird on Weekend Update - Saturday Night Live

Oh, I almost forgot: Everything's going to be fine.

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden has cast his vote in the 2012 election, saying "it's always a kick."

President Barack Obama's running mate says it was the eighth time he's run for election statewide. Asked if he thought it was the last time he'd vote for himself, he told reporters, "No, I don't think so."

Biden arrived with his wife, Jill, at Alexis I. DuPont High School in Greenville, Del., shortly after the polls opened and waited about 13 minutes. Also accompanying the vice president were his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden; Beau's wife, Hallie; and their 8-year-old daughter, Natalie.

Biden shook hands with and hugged other voters as he waited. He urged Americans to vote "even if you have to stand in line."

1. Why don?t you tell us a little bit about your background in the industry?
My name is Teresa LeYung-Ryan and my clients call me?Writing-and-Platform-Building Coach Teresa. I wish to thank Christy Pinheiro-Silva for this interview, and, I encourage everyone to look for the core messages in my responses?which are:??Reach out, not stress out, to material your dreams;? and, wear your two hats as a writer and be happy(whether you?re writing fiction, narrative nonfiction, or prescription nonfiction also known as ?how to? books/articles).This is what happened to me,?over ten years ago, and the choices I?ve made.I had a dream?a dream of connecting with readers the way Maxine Hong Kingston touched me with her memoir? The Woman Warrior.? Home Sweet Home: Great Home Improvement Tips | Gardening Gang

The right amount of information can give you the ability to accomplish anything. That goes for home projects too. For starters, check out the practical ideas and inspiration below; you are sure to find something that strikes your fancy and helps you to prepare.

It is important that your bathroom has proper ventilation. Showering and bathing lead to humidity, which leads to mold. Even if you repaint your bathroom walls repeatedly, that won?t kill off every bit of mold. Rather, take preventative steps aimed at keeping it from developing in the first place. Consider installing windows or ventilation solutions in order to keep your area dehumidified.

In many cases, just a small project can make a huge different to a home?s value. If you are considering selling your home, you might want to think about improving it in a few small ways. It is not very hard to transform your house, outside and in, with an easy paint job. Although it is an inexpensive project, it can increase your home value, dramatically.

If you?re a beginning handyman, try leveling up your skill by taking courses at places like Lowe?s and Home Depot. The larger stores want you to buy things from them, so they have classes about every home improvement task from painting to tile floor installation. Learn the basics through these classics prior to divining into your own home improvement project.

Use varnish over wallpaper to create an inexpensive, simple kitchen back splash. First, buy a pattern of wallpaper that you like. Cut the wallpaper bigger than the measurements from the wall. After you apply the paste to the back of the wallpaper allow it to become somewhat tacky for a minute or two before hanging it on the wall. Next, hang each piece of wallpaper. A squeegee can be used to smooth the surface and eliminate air bubbles. Once you have the bubbles removed, trim any excess paper off to create a better fit. Apply a coat of varnish with a paintbrush. Your new back-splash is both stylish and inexpensive.

It is easy for a small room to be overly dark due to insufficient lighting. Get some light into these rooms. This can be resolved through cleaning the windows and opening blinds. Rooms appear much larger and more open with good natural lighting. Use pale colors on your walls and avoid clutter. This simple change can make your room seem larger.

Investing in some extra insulation can really save money over the long term. Homes that are older especially tend to be way under-insulated. Adding extra to your attic or crawl space can lower your utility bills and save you money for years and years to come.

Fix up your house?s entrance by painting it and placing a brand new welcome mat in front of it. Your entryway plays a big part in the way your guests feel when they enter your home. A few nice touches, such as an attractive plant or a charming welcome mat, serve to make a great impression on people coming to your home.

When you have to have your roof redone, use light colored substances or white tile. Light colors deflect the heat from the sun away from the house. It is possible to realize great savings on your energy bills in this way.

Once you decide to stain your deck, you need to decide among numerous products. Some of the options are clear stains, semi-transparent ones, oil-based stains, solid color stains, and toners. There are positive and negatives to each one, so be sure to do research to get the best option for you.

Now you are much more prepared when it comes to home improvement. You may have thought yourself to be ready, look at yourself now! These tips should help you get motivated to make changes to your home.

(AP) ? Winning the Country Music Association Awards' entertainer of the year is a top honor and always counted as a career high point. But for Blake Shelton it wasn't even the most memorable moment of an amazing Thursday night.

"The Voice" star took home three trophies, including his third straight male vocalist victory, but nothing compared to sharing song of the year with wife Miranda Lambert. The pair wrote "Over You," about the death of Shelton's brother Richie in a car wreck 15 years ago. He said that trophy will always have a special place in their Oklahoma home.

"For me as a songwriter that is as personal as I can get," Shelton said. "So that songwriter award, song of the year award, it will have its own shelf. It will have spotlights on it and an alarm and everything. Trip wires and there will be a land mine if you walk towards it. It is a real big deal to Miranda and I."

Shelton's entertainer win was the biggest surprise of a night full of them. Even he couldn't believe he'd won the award in a field that included Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley.

"I didn't think about that tonight. I was thinking there's Taylor Swift right there," he said of the two-time entertainer of the year. "Really, this is pretty dumb that there's anyone else even nominated."

The reality, though, is Shelton capped one of the most impressive career reboots in country music history with the win. About three years ago, he was searching for a hit or a gimmick that might return him to the top of the charts, without much luck. He scored a novelty hit with Trace Adkins called "Hillbilly Bone," began a run of hits and then joined "The Voice" in a move that made him an instant celebrity outside the country world.

He hasn't sold as many records as Swift, whose "Red" just moved 1.2 million copies in its first week, or as many concert tickets as Chesney or Aldean. But his leading-man looks, wicked sense of humor, Twitter presence and mellow baritone have made him one of country's top stars.

While Shelton didn't give himself much of a shot, Lambert ? who also won her third straight female vocalist of the year award ? thought he fit the definition of entertainer of the year after doing a little research.

"I realized that it just meant not only touring numbers, not only ticket sales or how much production you have, but the way that you represent country music within a year," Lambert said. "The media that you do and the work that you do and the TV shows that you are on and how you represent yourself and how you speak out about country music. When you think about it that way, Blake Shelton deserved to win that trophy tonight."

Shelton's victory was just one of many surprises during the awards. Quartet Little Big Town joined Lambert with two wins apiece, taking home vocal group and single of the year for "Pontoon." And Thompson Square's Shawna and Keifer Thompson won vocal duo of the year, ending Sugarland's five-year run in that category.

"Y'all, this has been a 13-year journey," Karen Fairchild said as members of the group fist-pumped, jumped up and down and shouted on stage. "We're living proof that if you work really hard and chase your dream, all the good stuff happens and it follows you. Nashville, you made us your band. Thank you for letting us do this."

Like fellow outsiders LBT, Eric Church felt the love from the CMA's voters for the first time. He won the prestigious album of the year for his breakthrough record "Chief," signaling the North Carolina native's complete acceptance by the country music community.

"I spent a lot of my career wondering where I fit in ? too country, too rock," Church told the crowd. "I want to thank you guys for giving me somewhere to hang my hat tonight."

The awards went off-script early, and not just for Little Big Town. Thompson Square won in a category that's been locked up by either Sugarland or Brooks & Dunn 19 of the last 20 years.

"Ever since I was 5 years old, I used to practice in the kitchen with one of my Meemaw's Mason jars for this moment here," Shawna Thompson said.

Hunter Hayes won new artist of the year, while Chesney and Tim McGraw won musical event of the year for "Party Like a Rock Star" and Toby Keith won video of the year for "Red Solo Cup."

Church helped kick off the show by combining forces with Aldean and Luke Bryan. Playing with a large American flag behind them, the trio of performers teamed up on Aldean's new single "The Only Way I Know" from his new album "Night Train" and earned a standing ovation. Each returned later to play singles, showing how large a market share they now own in country music.

Most of country's top stars were on hand at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for the celebration, with many slated to perform. Swift performed her somber new single "Begin Again" on a set with a picture of the Eiffel Tower and falling leaves in the background. She received an ovation of her own.

Shelton, McGraw and wife Faith Hill, Lady Antebellum and Keith Urban joined together to salute lifetime achievement winner Willie Nelson, ending with a group sing-along of his iconic "On the Road Again."

Little Big Town performed their winner "Pontoon," a song that was something of a departure for Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet. Produced by Jay Joyce, the song has a sharper groove than LBT's previous efforts.

In a coincidence, Joyce also produced Church's "Chief." The hard edge he brought to both paid off all around.

Church said album of the year, arguably the CMA's second most prestigious award, was a win that fit right in with his and Joyce's philosophy.

"I still think in this day and time the only way to really get a fan base is you've got to give them more than one chapter of a book," Church said. "They've got to read the whole book."

Shuttle prototype Enterprise suffers storm damage

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The flying machine that ushered in NASA's space shuttle program has suffered storm damage in New York City.

Shuttle prototype Enterprise weathered Superstorm Sandy this week at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, but it sustained minor damage to its vertical stabilizer, or tail. A small piece of foam came off, said a museum spokesman.

The damage was confirmed Friday by both the museum and NASA as shuttle Atlantis concluded its journey to retirement at Florida's Kennedy Space Center.

Enterprise will be repaired at the earliest opportunity, the Intrepid museum said in a statement. The museum remains closed because of storm damage.

"Enterprise remains safely in place and partially covered by the fabric of the damaged pavilion, which was left in place as a protective measure," said museum director Susan Marenoff-Zausner.

Enterprise was used for atmospheric drop tests over Edwards Air Force Base in California in 1977, four years before the first shuttle launch. It was never designed for space travel.

This past spring, the Smithsonian Institution turned the Enterprise over to the Intrepid, at NASA's instruction. The Smithsonian needed to make room at its display hangar in Virginia for the retired space shuttle Discovery.

Enterprise was flown atop a modified jumbo jet to New York in April and moved to the Intrepid museum in June.

TSX sags as Goldcorp leads dive in resource stocks

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's benchmark stock index fell for the first time in seven sessions on Friday as a 2 percent drop in bullion and crude prices spurred a retreat in mining and energy stocks, with miner Goldcorp Inc leading the way.

Spot gold hit a two-month low, sliding 2 percent to below $1,690 and marking its fourth consecutive weekly decline, after a report showed a higher-than-expected number of U.S. jobs were created in October.

The U.S. data lowered expectations for more economic stimulus from global central banks.

"That helped the U.S. dollar strengthen and that affected the commodity prices," said Sal Masionis, stockbroker at Brant Securities.

A strong dollar makes commodities priced in the U.S. dollars more expensive for holders of other currencies.

Oil and gasoline futures fell more than 2 percent on Friday after Washington issued a waiver allowing foreign tankers to bring fuel to the U.S. Northeast, pointing to some relief to supply disruptions in the aftermath of super storm Sandy.

Five of the top six biggest drags on the TSX index were gold miners, which are a part of the index's materials group. The group encompasses nearly 20 percent of the index's weight and finished down 3.02 percent.

Goldcorp sank 5.02 percent to C$42.91. Yamana Gold Inc fell 5.09 percent to C$19.00, while Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd tumbled 6.3 percent to C$52.65.

Barrick Gold Corp , which had already plunged 9.48 percent on Thursday after posting a sharp decline in third-quarter profit, added to those losses, falling another 3.64 percent to finish at C$35.23.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed down 119.35 points, or 0.95 percent, at C$12,380.41. The index was still up 0.58 percent on the week.

Among the index's key sectors, only the heavily weighted financials group and the utilities sector were higher.

"We have to remember the TSX index has been up six days in a row, which is somewhat surprising especially when we've had a few earnings misses from some large cap names," said Gareth Watson, vice president, investment management & research at Richardson GMP.

Analysts said that the market could remain in negative territory amid the uncertainty ahead of the U.S. presidential election next Tuesday.

Energy stocks comprise about 25 percent of the index and they gave back 1.47 percent. Cenovus Energy was down 3.18 percent at C$34.45, while Crescent Point Energy was off 3.79 percent to C$39.86.

Modest gains among financial stocks - accounting for about a third of the index - helped stem some of the losses. Toronto- Dominion Bank

provided the biggest boost to the index, climbing 0.69 percent to C$82.29. It was followed by Manulife Financial Corp , which advanced 1.62 percent to C$12.56. The overall group was up 0.23 percent.

Among gainers, Inmet Mining Corp , which reported a 19 percent rise in third-quarter profit helped by higher copper sales volume from its Spanish Las Cruces mine, surged 6.77 percent to C$56.17.

SNC Lavalin Group Inc jumped 4.79 percent to C$42.17 after the construction and engineering firm reported a narrower-than-expected 8 percent decline in third-quarter profit.

TransGlobe Energy Corp shares soared 10.14 percent to finish at 12.06. The company had climbed as much as 14 percent earlier in the day after it won four of the 15 blocks on offer in an onshore licensing round in Egypt, according to a newspaper report.

Shares of Thomson Reuters Corp were down 1.30 percent at C$28.06 after the company reported a 15 percent fall in operating profit due to declining revenue and higher costs at the division that serves the financial industry.

Bombardier Inc was down was down 2.13 percent at C$3.68. About 330 workers at a Quebec rail-car factory belonging to the train-maker went on strike on Thursday over outsourcing and pension fund issues.

Mandeville mental health hospital ripe for private takeover | NOLA.com

The revival of Southeast Louisiana Hospital near Mandeville may become the task of a private company as early as next week, a development that could quell consternation over the unexpected closure of the state mental health facility that has treated area patients for 60 years. Local and state officials have been meeting with one or more of the four private companies that responded to the state Department of Health and Hospitals' Sept. 13 request for information and proposals related to the takeover of the facility.

While DHH has been coy about identifying which company has the upper hand, only one of the respondents offered a plan that would keep the facility intact on its present campus on U.S. 190 just east of Mandeville, a stipulation local officials have embraced from the get-go.

That company, MBH of Louisiana, LLC, a subsidiary of Meridian Behavioral Health Systems of Gainesville, Fla., offered a plan to reopen the hospital at its current location with almost 200 beds. Local officials said they've had several meetings with MBH executives and have emerged very impressed with the company's plan.

In its submission to DHH, the company indicated it would provide 40 acute care adult beds for patients ages 18-64; 15 acute child beds for ages 5-11; 25 acute adolescent beds for ages 12-17; 75 psychiatric residential treatment beds for children and adolescents; and 20 "diagnostic acute" beds for children and adolescents. The three other companies proposed either moving operations to other campuses or severely downsizing the Mandeville-area ?facility.

MBH officials could not be reached for comment.

DHH reported last month that its Office of Behavioral Health was evaluating the proposals and would make a decision by early November as to who will be chosen to operate the facility. DHH spokesperson Meghan Speakes said Friday that more than one company can be selected to operate the hospital, but she declined to say which companies were in negotiation with the state or when an announcement might be made.

"All we can say at this point is that things are going really well," she said. "We can not provide a timetable."

But on Wednesday, state Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, one of several legislators involved in the effort to save the mental hospital, told the St. Tammany-West Chamber of Commerce that negotiations were ongoing and "moving in the right direction. Positive results could be announced very soon," he said, declining to elaborate.

And on Thursday night, the St. Tammany Parish Council unanimously approved two resolutions setting the stage for a transfer of the hospital's operations. The resolutions authorize Parish President Pat Brister to execute cooperative endeavor agreements with DHH and an unnamed private provider. One resolution states "DHH will enter into an agreement with a private provider to continue the mental health services currently being provided at the hospital."

Brister said she has been involved in meetings with the state on the future of the hospital and "I'm feeling more optimistic with each meeting."

The hospital resolutions were taken up at the Thursday meeting in case the state reaches an agreement before the council's next meeting. "We're just being prepared," Brister said.

Catching many local officials by surprise, DHH announced in July that it would close the hospital, which had 94 in-patient beds earlier this year. DHH officials believe the closure will save $1.6 million this fiscal year and $3.5 million in subsequent years as the state struggles to cope with reductions in federal money for Medicare.

The state health department says it wants to ensure a sustainable behavioral care system for the future by de-emphasizing the role of large public institutions and instead building partnerships with community providers.

The shuttering of the hospital unleashed a wave of opposition from employees, families of patients and others who dread the loss of mental health facilities in the region. The immediate formation of the Committee to Save Southeast Louisiana Hospital helped stoke the issue by holding public rallies at the hospital and at the business offices of local legislators.

The group lobbied for a special session of the Legislature to address significant budget cuts made by Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration to the state's health care system. But a coalition of lawmakers failed to secure enough signatures to conduct a vote that would have forced a special session in late November.

Committee members have said privatizing the hospital is better than shutting it down, but they would prefer that it remain a public institution. They raised concerns that for-profit companies might be too focused on revenues and might be inclined to turn away patients who need long-term care. Committee spokesman Loren Foret said Friday that members have thus far been unsuccessful in getting a meeting with either DHH or the companies interested in taking over the hospital.

Several public bodies, including the Mandeville City Council, have gone on record to oppose the state's decision to close the facility. Area legislators from conservative-leaning St. Tammany, most of whom are close political allies of the Republican governor, have also spoken against the move.

Supporters say the hospital, which provided mental health and substance abuse treatment for patients from throughout the New Orleans area for 60 years and treated the likes of former Gov. Earl K. Long, allows families to stay in close contact with patients, an advantage that has ceased as beds are transferred to other?facilities in Jackson and Pineville, La.

Southeast Louisiana Hospital also provides an economic boost to the parish. With around 500 employees, it has been one of the largest employers in St. Tammany.

Jindal administration officials, who say they are grappling with an $859 million cut to the state's federal Medicaid financing and must take steps to close the gap, have been undaunted by the pressure. Hospital supporters have been miffed that DHH officials have failed to appear at public hearings and rallies in Mandeville.

In early October, DHH began the process of transferring patients from the hospital to similar state facilities in Pineville and Jackson. The transfer process is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

"The process has gone smoothly," Speakes said.

Teva turns 3Q loss on litigation, other charges

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. turned a third-quarter loss, as big charges tied to litigation and potential drugs weighed on the pharmaceutical company's performance. But its adjusted earnings topped Wall Street expectations.

The Israeli drugmaker said Thursday it recorded a $670 million charge in the quarter as it set aside money in case it has to cover damages in patient infringement case. It also recorded a $481 million charge due to a review of its research and development work that reduced the estimated value of products in its drug development pipeline.

Those charges countered revenue that grew 14 percent to $4.97 billion.

Overall, Teva lost $79 million, or 9 cents per share, in the three months that ended Sept. 30. That compares to earnings of $916 million, or $1.03 per share, in last year's quarter. Not counting the charges and other one-time items, Teva earned $1.28 per share.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, earnings of $1.25 per share on $5.06 billion in revenue.

Teva said its U.S. revenue, which makes up slightly more than half its total, climbed 33 percent in the quarter due in part to the inclusion of Cephalon, a branded drugmaker it acquired last fall.

Global revenue from Teva's multiple sclerosis treatment Copaxone climbed 13 percent in the quarter to $1.05 billion.

The company also said Thursday it narrowed its guidance for 2012. It now expects adjusted earnings of between $5.32 and $5.38 per share. That compares to its forecast in August for $5.30 to $5.40 per share.

Analysts expect, on average, 2012 earnings of $5.37 per share.

U.S.-traded shares of Teva climbed 77 cents to $41.19 in afternoon trading.

The Success Behind Video Chat | North of 85th

One of the primary ingredients of success of the web story is the growing rate of communication over it. Technological advances like chatting, blogging, and social networking have persisted to improve the communication landscape. Chatting is no longer an uninteresting activity where you?ve got to generate a good deal of text without being certain just who is on the other end. Video is reshaping chatting systems online ever drastically.

Video chat technology has been existing in some form or another for quite a while. Nevertheless, the costly character of this technological innovation and absence or unavailability of fast-paced internet connection has been an obstacle in its advancement until the 21st century. Right now, the technology in a lot of simple and sophisticated forms is utilized in several software applications effectively from private chatting to online learning, telemedicine, and business conferences.

The additional elements vital for a video chat consist of:
- Video Input/Output Equipment: Camera (ideally digital) hooked up to a computer system. You may likewise link an LCD screen to the computer to obtain an improved image resolution.
- Audio Input/Output Equipment: Speakers and Microphone.
- Network device: Internet service utilizing wired or wireless broadband

Along with the technological breakthroughs, a number of the earlier issues with this has not been fixed. Problems such as eye-to-eye contact have been typical concerns even in sophisticated systems such as Telepresence. In video chat rooms, participants are way too mindful of their presentability and that likewise hinders the major aim of communication. In addition, insufficient uniform and reliable standard bandwith supply renders video chat a cumbersome process in some areas. For instance, in India a superior broadband connection delivering non-buffering video streaming remains quite costly. Nevertheless, with the advent of 3G technology, the issue should be fixed. For proliferation of video chat, it needs to be made affordable to a greater number of people.

A lot of futurists have imagined a world where all telephone communications would require audio and video features. Actually, there have been suggestions that 3D imaging could very well be utilized to generate accurate simulations of the communicating party. A number of claims may appear toll order at present, but the rate with which the increase of video chat is taking place, the likelihood does not seem remote.

British army dog joins list of animal war heroes

LONDON (AP) ? British soldiers and military dogs gathered at a London army barracks Thursday to honor a fallen hero with selfless courage, nerves of steel ? and four legs.

Theo, a bomb-sniffing springer spaniel who died in Afghanistan on the day his soldier partner was killed, was posthumously honored with the Dickin Medal, Britain's highest award for bravery by animals.

Theo worked alongside Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, searching for roadside bombs in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Tasker, 26, died in a firefight with insurgents in March 2011, and Theo suffered a fatal seizure hours later. Tasker's mother, Jane Duffy, says the pair were inseparable. She's convinced Theo died of a broken heart.

"They'll be watching us, and they'll be so proud," she said. "I just wish they were here to get it themselves."

Since 1943, the Dickin Medal has recognized gallantry by animals serving with the military, police or rescue services. Some of these animal heroes:

CANINE COMMANDOS

Theo is the 28th dog to receive the medal, awarded by animal charity PDSA and named for its founder, Maria Dickin.

One of the earliest winners was Rip, a mongrel found abandoned in a bomb shelter and adopted by a London air raid warden. He was credited with finding more than 100 people trapped in rubble by German bombs during the 1940 Blitz.

Another World War II hero was Rob, a collie who joined British commandos in more than 20 parachute operations behind enemy lines in North Africa and Italy. His medal citation said that "his presence with these parties saved many of them from discovery and subsequent capture or destruction."

Dogs have also been honored for service in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and during terrorist attacks.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Apollo, a New York Police Department German shepherd, received the medal on behalf of all search and rescue dogs at the sites in New York and Washington, "for tireless courage in the service of humanity."

WINGED WARRIORS

Pigeons' homing instinct makes them excellent messengers, and more than 200,000 served with British forces during World War II. Some 32 were awarded the Dickin Medal for carrying back vital information from the frontline.

Feathered medal-winners include Gustav, a pigeon serving with the Royal Air Force, "for delivering the first message from the Normandy Beaches from a ship off the beach-head" on June 6, 1944, the day of the D-Day landings.

GI Joe, a member of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service, was honored for flying 20 miles (32 kilometers) in 20 minutes with a message that stopped U.S. planes bombing an Italian town occupied by British troops in October 1943, saving the lives of at least 100 Allied soldiers and many civilians.

HEROIC HORSES

Upstart, a London police horse, is one of three equine recipients of the medal.

He was honored for a World War II incident in which a German flying bomb exploded 75 yards away, "showering both horse and rider with broken glass and debris."

Despite this, "Upstart was completely unperturbed and remained quietly on duty with his rider," controlling traffic until calm was restored.

A FEARLESS FELINE

Only one cat has ever received the Dickin Medal.

Simon, a Royal Navy ship's mascot, was honored for his service on HMS Amethyst, a ship shelled by Chinese Communist forces on the Yangtze River in 1949.

Despite being seriously wounded by shrapnel, Simon returned to his rat-killing duties aboard the damaged ship, which was trapped for months in Chinese waters.

"Throughout the incident his behavior was of the highest order," the citation said.

Simon and the ship's crew were greeted as heroes when they made it back to England, but the cat died weeks before he was due to receive his medal.

NASA spacecraft sees huge burp at Saturn after large storm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.

Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.

Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."

First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.

Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).

According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.

"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.

A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.

"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.
