John Lewis Partnership names Waitrose's Price as deputy chair
LONDON (Reuters) - John Lewis Partnership Britain's biggest department store group, on Friday appointed Waitrose managing director Mark Price as its new deputy chairman.
Price will continue as managing director of the upmarket grocer, which is part of the employee-owned John Lewis Partnership, and one of Britain's fastest growing grocers, the company said.
John Lewis has traditionally been seen as a bellwether retailer and has outperformed the wider market for about three years.
Price has been with the John Lewis Partnership since 1982 and was appointed Waitrose's managing director in April 2007.
Earlier on Friday John Lewis said sales at its department stores fell 1.2 percent in the week to July 20, hit by the recent hot weather in Britain.

UFC on Fox 8's Michael Chiesa has a magnificent beard. A Grizzly Adams-esque, mountain man, perhaps even Tom-Hanks-in-Castaway beard. But you know who isn't a fan of that beard? His opponent on Saturday.
Jorge Masvidal is concerned he might catch something from the beard.
"I'm going to tell the commission to wrap that thing up," Masvidal said to MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get no mat herpes or nothing on my face. I've been in this game a long time, and I ain't got nothing on my face. I ain't about catch some syphilis or whatever he's got going on in that beard, you know?"
It's not completely out of line for a fighter to ask for hair to be held back during fights. Gray Maynard did for his bout with Clay Guida, but that was about Guida's long hair, not a beard. Is it possible Masvidal is just trying to mess with Chiesa's head before their fight? If so, Chiesa is not paying attention to it.
"To my fans, I refuse to talk [expletive] in interviews to get attention. I'll do my talking, Saturday night under the lights," Chiesa tweeted.

Microsoft Gamescom showcase event on August 20
Xbox One will get its time in the spotlight at a pre-Gamescom Showcase Event in Germany on August 20.
Microsoft will host the event at at the Dock One in Cologne, where Xbox execs Phil Spencer and Phil Harrison will lead proceedings, reports Polygon.
ZoomNo time slot was mentioned, but it was previously indicated to CVG that the firm will host a one-hour show.
The media briefing will be the first of its kind that Microsoft has held in Gamescom's history - and is another signal of its dedication to attain a better foothold in Europe.
In May, CVG was told by Sony sources that both companies are targeting Europe as a heightened priority region - in many ways more important than Japan - as part of the race to increase marketshare.
Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date window of November, but is yet to divulge region-specific launch plans beyond that.
Keen gamers will be hoping to get a clearer picture of the firm's launch plans, including a definitive launch-day software line-up, and further clarification of Xbox One policies, specifically regarding used games and self-publishing, following its recent changes in those areas.
Microsoft's Showcase Event will fall on the same day as Sony's, which will take place at the Saatenhaus am Rheinpark in Cologne from 7pm CET (6pm UK), MCV reported today.
Gamescom runs from August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany.
